Early Times Report

budgam, June 15: Doodh Pathree a lush green meadow was brought on the tourism map only eight years back. This place became so famous within a short span of time that on an average five to six thousand people throng this place on daily basis during summer months.
Located in Khansahib tehsil of central Kashmir's Budgam district Doodh Pathree is spread over an area of around more than 5000 hectares on plain meadows and as well as alpine forests . River Shali Ganga also flows through the southern end of Doodh Pathree.
Due to rough road, not many people used to visit this place earlier but after macadamization of the road Khansahib to Doodh Pathree, tourist inflow has drastically increased in this area. PDP- Congress coalition Government from 2003-2008 also played a great role for the development of Doodh Pathree as the government created Doodh Pathree Development Authority (DDA) for development of this place.
Locals give credit of the development of Doodh Pathree to local MLA Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen who was a cabinet Minister in PDP-Congress rule. But from the last couple of years, some vested interest and influential people are trying to grab forest land at Doodh Pathree so that they could use this for their own benefit by constructing hotels, restaurants etc. Even some people have purchased the Gujjar dokes (mud huts) and are converting them into guest houses . This scheme is actually meant for the Gujjar community but instead of poor and needy people getting benefitted from this scheme , influential people are trying to make their entry into Doodh Pathree. Only a few days back some civil society groups and RTI activists exposed illegal construction of new dokes in Doodh Pathree in connivance with officials from Doodh Pathree Development Authority (DDA) and Forest department. "These illegal constructions look like dokes from outside but they are actually guest houses meant for commercial purposes" said a local resident Fayaz Ahmad.
A public hearing at was a also held at Doodh pathri on Saturday to chart out course of action to remove the structures, allegedly constructed by some influential persons of the area. Civil society groups allege that this place has become a point of attraction for the investors and they try to find out ways to get lease rights here. Local residents have demanded that illegal constructions should be dismantled without any delay .
