Bhaderwah Campus organizes lectures on Earthquakes | | | Early Times Report
Bhaderwah, June 15: In wake of the series of earthquakes the whole Chenab is witnessing for the past one year, a series of lectures were organized by Bhaderwah Campus to aware the general masses about the types, causes of origin and precautions to be taken pre and post major earthquakes. Prof. Paul Denton, a renowned seismologist from British Geological Survey and the invited speaker during the forthcoming International conference at Leh in his power point presentation highlighted the causes and types of earthquakes though better simulation models which attracted a great interest amongst the student community. Dr. Bindra Thusoo (Fellow Geological Society of London, Honorary Senior Research Fellow & Research Supervisor, Meghreb Petroleum Research Group (MPRG), University College London, U.K. Research Affiliate Scientist & Project Advisor) in his expert talk gave an overview of the geological composition and tectonic activity in this part of the Himalayas. Prof. G.M Bhat, Rector, Bhaderwah Campus and an eminent geologist detailed out the basics of earthquakes especially in the Chenab catchment which is too fragile and more vulnerable when it comes to the natural disasters like earthquakes, landslides etc. He emphasized upon the audience to strictly follow the building codes and avoid built up on slopes and other dos and don'ts during and after the earthquakes. The lectures were followed by the interactive sessions wherein all the experts responded to the queries of the audience. |
