1 dead, 3 injured in drowning incident at Baramulla

TANGMARG, June 15: One died while three other local tourists of Srinagar sustained injuries when they were bathing in a stream in Ferozpora Nallah of Tangmarg area in north Kashmir's Baramulla district today.
According to sources, a group of youth from Mahjoor Nagar Srinagar had gone to Tangmarag area for a picnic, where they went to take a bath in Ferozpora Nallah popularly known as Drang. Eye Witness said that four youth from Srinagar's Mahjoor Nagar had gone to Drung in Tangmarg for a picnic and were taking bath in Ferozpur stream when the water from a nearby power canal was released.
A youth was killed while another sustained injuries. The deceased was identified as Yaqoob Ahmad Makroo and the injured as Gulzar Ahmad Bhat, two others as Hilal Ahmad Kachroo and Farooq Ahmad, all residents of Mahjoor Nagar.
"At 12 noon, they started taking bath in the stream and suddenly, the level and flow of water increased as the extra water from the power canal of Drung power project was released," said a group of tourists at Tangmarg. "It washed away the group and one of them could not be rescued while other sustained injuries, two others were rescued by the locals," a local said.
The body of drowned boy was later searched and taken out by the rescue team comprising of police and navy personals. According to Mohammad Sultan Mir residents of Ferozpora, "this place attracts one and all as the pleasant climate, magnificent landscapes, gardens of blooming flowers, dense pine forests, and beautiful lakes of Gulmarg attract tourists from all over the world". The tranquility of the atmosphere and the lush green backdrop makes this place an ideal picnic and camping spot. Ningle Nallah and Ferozepore Nallah are some of the popular streams in the region Mir said. However the authorities from Tangmarag area did not confirm that the water was released from the power canal. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) North Kashmir Ghulam Hassan Bhat said that, three youth were rescued and one boy couldn't be saved.
His body was recovered, and has been identified as Yaqoob Ahmad Makroo of Mehjoor Nagar Srinagar. It is worthwhile to mention here that the pristine and clear waters of the Drung is said to be blessed with medicinal properties, owing to which many tourists visit the stream. Also popular among visitors is the Biosphere Reserve of Gulmarg. Drung, is a tourist spot at Gulmarg which was recently discovered, is perfect for one-day picnics. Visitors can not only enjoy the scenic beauty of the place but also indulge in activities like trout fishing.
