Corruption, misgoverance responsible for rout in LS polls | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 16 : All India Congress Committee (AICC) member Abdul Gani Vakil said that corruption and misgovernance was responsible for total rout of coalition National Conference (NC) and Congress in the Lok Sabha elections in the state. PDP won all the three seats in the Kashmir valley as there was no alternative for voters because of alliance between Congress and NC, said Mr Vakil, who campaigned for NC candidates. He said alliance with NC proved very costly to Congress and there should be no alliance for the General Assembly elections due later this year. There was anger among the voters because of misgovernance and corruption, former minister Vakil said adding since there was no alternative available, people voted PDP. Vakil, who was opposed to any alliance with NC during the Lok Sabha polls, later campaigned alongwith other Congress leaders for all the three NC candidates in the valley. However, all the three candidates--former union minister Dr Farooq Abdullah from Srinagar, Dr Mehboob Baig from Anantnag and Sharief uddin Shariq from Baramulla--lost to PDP candidates. Addressing a gathering in Baramulla today he reiterated that Congress will not forge any alliance with NC for Assembly elections. He claimed that if Pre-Poll alliance would have not been forged between these two parties in Lok sabah elections the result would have been different. Congress is capable of facing electorate on its own performance, he said. He said everyone was now fed up of sentimental slogans and are interested in the development and a corruption free society. The Congress never endorsed double standards or hollow sloganeering for voting consideration but believe in tangible actions for the betterment and uplift of poor, downtrodden, needy people. This vision, he said, of Congress party is reflected in NREGA, Right to Free and Compulsory Education, opening of new Anganwari Centres, launching of various financial assistance schemes in the state. |
