Ganderbal declared 'unsafe' for Farooq to contest Assembly elections

Srinagar, June 17: Amidst speculations about Farooq Abdullah's decision to contest upcoming Assembly elections from Ganderbal within NC, sources say that the party patriarch may shift to another constituency as the Ganderbal is no more a safe haven for him.
Talking to Early Times, National Conference (NC) candidate form central Kashmir's Ganderbal District, Ishfaq Jabar said that 'though there will be a direct contest between him and any candidate of people's democratic party in the area, yet recent political developments must not be ignored.
"We have Qazi Afzal of PDP here, Ghualm Nabi Saloora who fled from NC and formed his own party too has some following in the area, other parties which used to remain away from Ganderbal are also contesting from Ganderbal this time, besides some independents as well, all such factors obviously make the completion tough," said NC candidate.
He said that though it is up to the party high command to decide who will contest from which constituency, however seeing the mood swing of the people of Ganderbal this time, it seems people are willing to only vote for those candidates who have satisfactory background and bright vision for development for the area.
Pertinently, NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah is eying one out of the two constituencies of Ganderbal District to contest upcoming assembly elections.
Sources said that following the rout to NC in recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, one senior leader of NC contesting from one of the constituencies may be shown door or he may be asked to contest from any constituency of Rajouri or Poonch areas and leave the space for Farooq Abdullah to contest from the area.
"Omar Abdullah who contested from Ganderbal last time may switch over to Sonawar constituency and if it happens then automatically Farooq Abdullah would himself contest from Ganderbal, likewise if Farooq himself contests from Sonawar, Omar would contest from Ganderbal to keep the ancestral battle alive, yet in both the cases it will be tough time for Abdullah's to maintain their reputation in Gandrbal."
Sources said that keeping in view the recent rout to NC, vote shift in Gandrbal after Budgam District was considered a major factor in the defeat of NC patron, Farooq Abdullah and incase any senior leader of NC switched over to any other political party or decided to contest independently, such a situation would add worries for NC only.
Sources also said that in case NC failed to curb the ongoing internal bickering in which some renowned NC leaders are presently involved in Ganderbal District and which has earlier already resulted in exclusion of Ghulam Nabi Saloora, PDP would have a safe Heaven in Ganderbal to contest during upcoming assembly elections add at least one seat to the kitty without any tough competition with the opposition.
