NC undergoes vertical split in Mendhar over mandate to Rana | | | Farooq Nazki SRINAGAR, June 30: National Conference has undergone a vertical split in Mendhar with one group of party workers and office bearers openly and vehemently opposing party mandate for Javed Rana and the other supporting him. The split wide open was on display during the recent visit of NC provincial president Devendra Rana and Minister for Planning and former provincial president Ajay Sadhotra to Mendhar. According to reports, a delegation led by Shoukat Choudhary, president Sarpanchs' association along with former legislators Nissar Ahmad, Ikhlaq Ahmad and Rahim Dar made it clear to the visiting leaders that they would openly oppose if the party gave mandate to Javed Rana, who is member of the State Legislative Council and also its deputy chairman at present. The delegation asserted that they shall support any Gujjar or Pahari candidate nominated by the party as candidate from Mendhar, but not Rana. Meanwhile, another deputation of locals and party workers met the visiting NC leaders and demanded mandate in favour of Javed Rana and made it clear that they shall not support any other candidate except Rana as party candidate for the forthcoming Assembly elections from Mendhar. The reports of vertical split have peeved the senior party leadership as Ali Mohammad Sagar, who was scheduled to visit Mendhar and inaugurate several developmental works in the region deferred his visit. Reports suggest that Sagar came to Poonch and summoned both Rana and Sadhotra to get first hand information over the situation in Meandhar. "Sagar expressed his anguish over the split in the party cadre and inability of Rana and Sadhotra to bring the party workers at same platform" a source divulged. It is pertinent to mention here that both PDP and NC are eyeing twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri to improve their tally in Jammu region. |
