And now, Shankracharya demands abrogation of Article 370
Debate

Rustam
JAMMU, July 2: Article 370, which accords a separate status to J&K on purely sectarian grounds, is the most controversial provision in the Indian Constitution. It was adopted in October 1949 and enforced in 1950 at the behest of the communal leadership in Kashmir. In fact, Article 370 was nothing but a conspiracy that was hatched by the Congress and the National Conference against India and the minorities in J&K. Ever since then, a fierce debate has been going on anti-people and anti-democratic provision in various circles with some supporting it and some demanding its repeal.
It is too well-known that the NC and similar other Kashmir-based parties, including the JKLF and the CPI-M and CPI, besides pseudo-secular outfits like the Congress, SP, JDU, RJD, DMK, the NCP and so on, are the supporters of Article 370. The reason is obvious and one of the reasons is their belief that their support to Article 370 could help them consolidate their hold over what they consider a communal constituency. The parties like the NC consider this provision a bridge between the state and the Centre and they consistently threaten that the state would not remain part of India in case Article 370 is abolished. Indeed, a spurious and untenable and communally-motivated argument.
On the other hand, there are parties and people who want this Article to go lock, stock and barrel. The political parties, social organizations and people opposed to Article 370 include the BJP, Shiv Sena, RSS, VHP, BSP, Panthers Party, Jammu State Morcha and the Panun Kashmir, bulk of Ladakhi population and an overwhelming majority of population in Jammu, refugees from West Pakistan and PoJK and so on. They consider Article 370 a grave evil or mother of all ills facing them and the country as a whole. Their view is that Article 370 has, on the one hand, created a serious doubt in the minds of the international community about the political status of J&K and, on the other hand, harmed the interests of the minorities as well as the common Kashmiri Muslims and only empowered a handful of Kashmiri leaders and their henchmen in Jammu and Ladakh. They are absolutely right. They are also right when they say that only those who are being benefited by Article 370 are supporting this divisive, Article.
Only the other day, Shankracharya of Jyotish and Dwaraka-Sharda Peeths (Haridwar) Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati also took the plunge and demanded abrogation of Article 370. In a communication to the media, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, who is held in high esteem by the Hindus across the world, questioned the very relevance of this atrocious Article and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal it in the national interest. He said, "We cannot have two constitutions and two flags in one country and Article 370 must be scrapped at the earliest to bring J&K to the national mainstream". "Modi Government is not weak; it is a strong Government and it must abrogate Article 370," he said.
What Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati said could be construed as a major political development in the country. It has the potential of inspiring many others to follow in his footsteps. Let there be debate on Article 370 to find if it has benefited the state and its people and the country or harmed all the three regions. Article 370 is not sacrosanct or provisions of the Indian Constitution, which could be amended or scrapped by invoking Article 368 of the Indian Constitution. Those who term this provision a bridge are only misleading the people and they need to be exposed. Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati has done well to intervene and speak the truth. Indeed, it is time to respect his sane suggestion and agitate like Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee agitated in the early 1960s for the cause of the country and made a supreme sacrifice by laying down his life in Kashmir itself after willfully violating the obnoxious permit system.
