PDP won't go with BJP, Congress relieved | | | Mustansir
Srinagar, July 12: As often said, 'politics is the art of possibilities' the cold war between PDP and Congress leadership seems to be a thing of past now. Power corridors of Srinagar are rife with the talk that the estranged partners may join hands for government formation after state assembly elections. In the race for power, all is forgiving. Though there are reports that PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayed has cold shouldered senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's overtures, insiders, however, admit that Congress leadership is now convinced that the PDP cannot reach the magical tally of 44 but at the same time will not go with BJP for power sharing. Congress functionaries-both in J&K and 10-Janapath are aware that 2014 is witnessing a PDP upswing and any chance of power sharing will come only with PDP. More so because the PDP posturing has made it abundantly clear that the party will not forge any alliance with BJP. Sources in congress revealed that AICC president, Sonia Ghandi was non-committal on any kind of future arrangement with NC in the state and chief minister, Omar Abdullah's recent meeting with Sonia could not break the ice on the issue. Sources said congress high command, this time around, cannot afford a decision on personal likings. Sources in congress said that the party which has 17 MLAs at present will leave no stone unturned to retain 12 to 15 seats and is hoping to entice with PDP. According to them this tally will give congress significant bargaining power with PDP. They maintained that PDP will be short of the simple majority at least by 12 to 15 seats and Congress will certainly try to retain this number in the forthcoming assembly elections. Sources said that both the estranged partners have realized that joining hands after the polls is in the best interest of the state. Sources said that PDP was initially reluctant on the issue. But 'in politics bulls chase lizards and rats marry snakes', the two are not ready to bury the hatchet. A senior congress minister in Omar Abdullah cabinet, while admitting that PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayed showed magnanimity all along and his leadership was acceptable to all the congressmen in the state. He said that Mufti stands for the unity and integrity of the state but is not a rubber stamp in the hands of New-Delhi. He is the man who could keep Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh intact as he has the vision to run the state affairs while taking on board all shades of opinion. "Not a single incident was regional discrimination and communal tension was reported during his tenure" said the congress leader. The senior congress leader made startling revelation that in 2007-08 attempts were made by some congress leaders to split the PDP but Mufti's undisputed leadership made the congressmen to eat a humble pie. This and other developments clearly indicate that the estranged partners may forge alliance, at least after polls for government formation. |
