Race for Central University VC begins, claimants of RSS connections line-up

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 12: With present Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sudhir Singh Bloeria's term coming to an end on August 9, 2014; Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) connections seem to have overnight become most relevant for those aspiring to take over as Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Jammu.
While the search committee is yet to be constituted, Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) seems to have become holy cow overnight even for those who until yesterday used to call themselves think-tank of Congress and National Conference (NC). A professor who has throughout life taken benefits from Congress and NC has written a long letter to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, referring to his RSS roots while pleading for being considered for the top job.
He has pleaded with Jaitley to write a note to the Union Human Resource Development Ministry recommending his name. Though HRD Ministry has to frame a search committee for the appointment of VC of Central University (CU) Jammu but it is largely believed in the academic circles that those with RSS and BJP connections do have an edge. Hence, even those who have no professional administrative experience have queued up for being considered for the top job.
Their only qualification is their claim of being RSS card holders. Sources said that ex-ABVP leader and now a Professor of Physics in Jammu University, Prof. Naresh Padha has also begun lobbying. They added that Padha initially wanted the post of Vice-Chancellorship for his brother Prof. Devanand and had also begun making some efforts. But when he came to know that his brother was not eligible, sources said that he put forth his name and began using his connections for the cause.
Prof. Devanand is Dean in the School of Basic and Applied Sciences of the Central University (CU). Sources disclosed that Prof. Naresh Padha has been aggressively using his political as well as official connections to somehow get Prof. Rajiv Gupta, who is Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university, ousted so that his road to becoming Vice-Chancellor gets clear.
They added that several anonymous letters have been written to the HRD Ministry against Gupta, who is also one of the top contenders for the job of Vice-Chancellor. Padha has also, according to sources, floated story of having been victimised for Sangh connections by present Governor N.N.Vohra. His claim is that he was removed from the post of Registrar on the directions of Governor N.N.Vohra, allegedly for his Sangh connections, sources shared.
Sources further said that Prof. Padha developed close rapport with Minister in the PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh and other Sangh leaders during the 2008 Amarnath land agitation. Some of his close friends say that Padha was backroom boy during the land row agitation. They talk high of Padha's connections with RSS and BJP in Jammu as well as in Nagpur. Whether these claims are based on facts or not, the fact remains that Padha is one of the contenders for the top job.
Sources in the CU said that OSD in the CU Prof. P.S.Pathania despite having retired is also making desperate efforts for being given some job in the CU. They added that Pathania too is discomfortable with Prof.Rajiv Gupta and wants him to be sidelined at the earliest. Sources disclosed that Pathania has been vigorously trying to pursue a select group of BJP leaders to plead his case.
It needs to be mentioned here that Pathania has remained in news for all the wrong reasons and yet the government has been bestowing him with one or the other position for the reasons best known to them. On the contrary, Prof. Rajiv Gupta remained Director Colleges for a long time and managed to complete his tenure without any controversy or scam. Apart from Prof. Naresh Padha and Prof. Rajiv Gupta, another name doing round in the political circles is that of Prof. R.D.Sharma.
