Mainstream politicians, separatists on same page on July 13 | Both make Kashmiris suffer | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, July 13: July 13 is the day when mainstream politicians and separatists of Kashmir speak in the same tone every year about the "martyrs" of July 13,1931. Everyone of them remains in a hurry to reach the graveyard and offer prayers amid the claims of legacy. But in reality, both make the Kashmiris to suffer on this day for no fault of theirs. Like earlier occasions, Kashmir today observed a complete shutdown. The separatist factions had called for a strike and a march towards the Martyrs graveyard following which all business establishments remained closed amid restrictions by the authorities in old city where traffic remained off the roads and people preferred to remain indoors. As separatists had called for the shutdown, the mainstream parties reached the martyrs graveyard at Naqshband Sahib in old city. The Chief Minister along with Legislative Assembly Speaker Mubarak Gul, Minister for Finance-Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister for Rural Development-Ali Mohammad Sagar and Minister for CAPD-Ch. Mohammad Ramzan and Minister for Law and Justice-Mir Saifullah also visited the graveyard. The authorities had clamped curfew in the areas falling under five police stations in old Srinagar city to maintain peace in the area and put separatists under house detention and as per reports hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani continues to remain under house arrest while as other separatist leaders like Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar who was scheduled to take out a rally to Naqshband Sahib was also placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence, besides separatist (JK) leaders Shabir Shah and Nayeem Khan were arrested on Saturday evening. Interestingly, both mainstream and separatists of Kashmir on this day speak in the same tone and claim legacy of the Martyrs of July 13, 1931 which as per historical accounts is a day when 23 Kashmiris fell to the bullets of troopers of Dogra ruler Hari Singh on July 13, 1931. Pertinently to avert any untoward incident amid the claim of legacy between the mainstream and separatist factions, the District Magistrate of Srinagar had issued an order under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, barring any gathering of five or more people in the old city areas. |
