Tension grips Bishnah, SP among several hurt in clashes | 3 vehicles, 4 shops burnt; NH blocked at Bari Brahmana | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 13: Police today fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge after tension gripped Bishnah following the objection by members of a particular community to the holding of a dangal (wrestling) at Bagbatti. In the resulting clashes, that left dozens, including SP, Samba, and two cops injured, the irate people burnt down three vehicles, including an ambassador car and a police Gypsy jeep. Section 144 was imposed and additional deployment of security forces was made to tackle the situation. The Baba Prayagnath Committee members, like every year, gathered on a land at Bagbatti in Bishnah to hold a dangal. The land is spread in 293 kanals of area. DC, Samba, R.K Varma when contacted said, "Situation is under control after the mob set one ambassador car and a police gypsy on fire. As precautionary measure, section 144 has been imposed." The incident took place when members of organizing committee were not allowed to hold Indian style traditional wrestling (Dangal) in the land of Baba Prayagnath in Bishnah. The 293 kanals of land situated at village Bagbatti falls under the jurisdiction of Bishnah Police Station. It became the bone of contention when Auqaf staked its claim over the said piece of land and took a stay order from High Court. As per reports, when, the traditional wrestling, was started, some people intervened and stopped them to hold Dangal forcing the organizing committee to hold protest. Reports said that earlier district administration gave permission to the committee of Baba Prayagnath to hold Dangal. As tempers ran high, DIG Jammu Kahua range Shakeel Beigh, DC Jammu Ajit Kumar Sahu, DC Samba R.K Barma, SSP Jammu Uttam Chand and SP went to the spot and made bid to resolve the issue, but it went worse when some angry persons started pelting stones. At 4 pm, some people gathered at Bari Brahmna and blocked National Highway by putting the burning tyres on road. Later, they pelted stone on vehicles forcing police to use cane charge. In the ding dong battle, three police men including Additional S P Samba Suram Singh who is holding he charge of SSP Samba received injuries. In the entire incident, three vehicles, four shops were tortured besides injuries to the scores of people. Police have registered a case in this connection. |
