I don't mind being an arm candy if it's opposite Salman Khan, says Jacqueline Fernandes
7/22/2014 10:06:54 PM
Being one of the
many foreign ex-
ports to Bollywood, Jacqueline Fernandes had initially faced a lot of flak for her poor acting credentials and her language barrier. But today, when you see her, she doesn't walk anymore, she seems to glide, she doesn't talk anymore, she just bowls you over. In a one to one conversation with the lovely Jacqueline, ahead of her Eid release, we discover some untold secrets. Read on to see where Jacqueline gets her 'Kick' from.
Your last two films did so well. So Kick seems to be an extension of your super successful phase. How do you take it?
Yes, my films had been doing well at the box office. But I, myself cant take credit for it. With a Murder 2, the situation was a lot different. But with Race 2 and Housefull 2, they were all multi-starrers. So it was not just my film. I was appreciated in Murder 2 but in Housefull 2 or in a Race 2, the entire movie was appreciated, everyone was appreciated. So I can take credit for the films that I am solely in and hopefully if Kick works well, I will get to feel that somewhere it is also because of me.
From being heavily criticised in your first film to being called the next superstar in the making now, how do you look at the change in people's outlook?
I don't blame the critics for whatever they told or wrote about me that time. I myself was not happy with the work I had done myself. I don't rate it as an amazing performance either. For my first film, I definitely was very reserved and shy in front of the camera, including a major language problem. I also had problems with dancing but then I hate excuses so I don't want to give them as well. The roles that I have been getting after that, they were all big and they were being helmed by brands. They were big franchises. The roles were not sufficient for me to have done much although. But in retrospect when I look back at what I have done, I probably think I would have done things differently. At that time, I was working really hard trying to make a mark. But I just did not know or had no idea of what was going on in my life. I never had too many connections or industry friends. There were only a few people I had worked with. but there were not many people I could confide in or even ask for advice. I could not believe or trust people much. There were a bunch of things which did not go the way I wanted them to be.
It is an industry norm that if you do a film opposite the Khans, your roles are reduced to just mere arm candies. Were there any apprehensions before you signed the film?
When I signed Kick, I knew this would be the biggest movie in my career. Having said that, I would also add that it was always a dream to work with Salman Khan. To be directed by Sajid Nadiadwala in his first directorial venture, I just thought, 'Forget everything. Even if I am reduced to an arm candy, it doesn't matter, as long as you have a Salman in it'. It is definitely a step ahead from what I am right now and it would only do good to me and my career. So when I heard the narration and I started working on the movie, I was like, 'Oh my God, there's so much for me to do in the movie (Laughs out loud). It is definitely a lot more than what I ever did in any movie before this. That kind of surprised me and I am not saying this because people are calling me an arm candy or stuff. I was more shocked to see that they have cast me in a movie where it is more about a performance-oriented character.
There have been a lot of rumours coming ahead of your release. Does that affect you in any manner?
Anyone would get bothered with baseless rumours and I am one person who can take criticism very well. but by criticism, I mean people genuinely telling me what is right and what is wrong. I don't like people talking behind my back, making speculations. I enjoy criticism, I would rather welcome it because I want to be better. I get really irritated when people don't tell me the truth when I ask for their honest opinions. We all have different perspectives of what we see. So sometimes when I cant myself and what I should do, I want someone else to do it for me. Of course, I don't enjoy baseless, vindictive, negative rumours. True or not true, I don't see any need of that to be there. I would never do that to any fellow actor or actress, I would not do that to anyone.
