Congress unwilling to withdraw support to Omar led Govt | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 22: Since Congress ministers and legislators are said to be opposed to holding early Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir the Government led by Omar Abdullah, does not seem to face any immediate threat. Inside reports said that senior NC and Congress leaders are not prepared to face the electorate without initiating people-friendly measures. They feel if early elections are held the Congress and the NC may lose to the PDP in the valley and to the BJP in the region of Jammu. The NC leadership does not want to precipitate a situation in which the Congress opened its doors for a post-poll alliance with the PDP. Hence, the NC leadership may not recommend dissolution of the Assembly after Omar Abdullah announced his resignation. And the Congress too may not provoke the NC leadership to meet the Governor and recommend early Assembly election after placing the state under the Governor's rule. Leaders of the two parties believe that if the election is held under the NC led coalition rule both the Congress and the NC had better chances for bagging a number of seats. Yes, the Congress leadership cannot support and come to the rescue of Omar Abdullah, if the current turmoil over the Gaza strikes by Israeli troops, in which one civilian was killed and several injured in police firing in Kashmir, assumed alarming dimensions. If a situation assumed dangerous dimensions the Congress may withdraw its support to the NC led Government. If it does so Omar will have to resign and the state had to be placed under the Governor's rule to be followed by Assembly election. If the Congress high command, especially Rahul Gandhi, had supported Omar Abdullah when the Kashmir valley was rocked by five-month long strife in 2010 in which 120 people were killed it was outcome of desire of the Congress to avoid altering the political arrangement in the state which was simply less than two year old. But if the situation turned ugly Omar may quit thereby securing himself and his party against any taint on account of using form measures against the protesters. |
