Tragedy revisits Baltal base camp
Bhandara gutted in fire; 4 die, 3 injured

SRINAGAR, July 22: Tragedy struck at the Baltal base camp of the Amarnath Yatra in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district after fire broke out in one of the community kitchens (langar) resulting into the death of four persons. The fire broke out after a gas cylinder exploded with a big bang inside the kitchen.
Reports reaching here said that all the deceased were part of the Shiv Shakti Bhandara of Punjab and were busy in preparing breakfast for the Amarnath Yatris when the tragedy struck them. Other reports suggested that the Bhandara members were sleeping at the time of incident. The fire resulted in instant death to all the four persons with the fire being controlled so that it does not spread to nearby tents.
As soon as the news about the explosion spread, senior civil and police officers reached the spot in order to assess the situation. Although, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel tried their best to douse the flames, the fire could be controlled only after the tent housing the Bhandara got completely gutted.
The dead persons have been identified as Gurdeep Singh son of Baldev Singh resident of Mansar - Punjab, Yadander Singh son of Major Singh resident of Bathinda - Punjab, Sandeep son of Tarseem resident of Mansar-Punjab and Babu Singh resident of Bathinda-Punjab.
The Shiv Shakti Bhandara had come all the way from Punjab to take part in the community service of providing food to the yatris for this Amarnath Yatra. The members of the Bhandara group were actively discharging their religious obligations of providing food to the Yatris who come from different parts of the country.
Three members of the Shiv Shakti Bhandara got injured in the incident. They were taken to the Primary Health Centre, Sonamarg in a critical condition. Last reports said that the condition of injured persons is stated to be stable.
The persons injured in the incident have been identified as Manjeet Singh son of Buta Singh resident of Bathinda-Punjab, Jasbir Singh son of Bhol Singh resident of Bathinda-Punjab and Harpaul Singh son of Major Singh resident of Mansar-Punjab.
The incident sent shock waves among the members of other Bhandaras and the Yatris. However, the Yatra carried on smoothly with devotees have a glimpse of Shiv Lingam in the Amarnath cave. More than 3, 10,000 yatris have so far had darshan of the Lingam.
A police spokesman while divulging details said the incident took place when the breakfast was being prepared for the Amarnath Yatris.
"Today at about 4:15 AM when the breakfast was being cooked, there was leakage of an LPG pipe which resulted in gas cylinder burst. Due to this, fire broke out in the Shiv Shakti Bhandara at Domail. In the incident four persons died while as three others got injured," said the police spokesman.
The spokesman said that the injured were treated at nearby hospital and are stated to be stable. He said the fire was brought under control adding that an FIR has been lodged with respect to the incident. The spokesman said that all the dead and the injured belonged to Punjab and were part of Shiv Shakti Bhandara.
