Is Sheikh Nazir helping NC to build anti-centre feelings in Kashmir ?
7/23/2014 9:20:25 PM
Gradually the National Conference is
trying to adopt anti-centre postures for
the basic purpose of strengthening its vote bank in the Kashmir valley. Having realized that its vote bank has suffered severe erosion which was evident from the total rout the party faced during the recent Lok Sabha election in the Kashmir valley the NC leadership is making all possible efforts to build anti-centre feelings in the Kashmir valley. It does so because it knows its success in retaining power depends on its performance in the Valley's 46 Assembly seats. The first step it took was to snap ties with the Congress, which is viewed by a major section of people, in the Valley as symbol of India or a symbol of the Centre. And to buttress the party's anti-centre stance senior NC leader and family member of Abdullahs, Sheikh Nazir Ahmed, has shed light on various contentious issues. Though Sheikh Nazir is treated as a spent up force within National Conference because of his failing health, his views may be treated as the views of the party leadership. Having remained close to Sheikh Abdullah and later enjoying complete sway on party leaders and workers Sheikh Nazir is well aware of those issues that could influence people in the valley. He has talked about those issues that can make people, rather voters, in the valley emotional. The first salvo he has fired, in an interview to a Srinagar based newspaper, is "I am a Kashmiri and not an Indian."And that has been the reason for him not to apply for passport. That has been the reason that he has never visited any foreign land because he did not want to travel on an Indian passport. Once Sheikh Abdullah had asked him to accompany him during his trip to a foreign country but Sheikh Nazir refused because he did not want to travel on an Indian passport.
Another issue he has touched pertains to the state's accession to India and claims that it was the Maharaja who had signed the accession and it was he who had sought from New Delhi Army's assistance for pushing back Pak raiders. He has talked about the demand of the NC for the restoration of autonomy. He believes that New Delhi ditched the NC and Sheikh Abdullah when it failed to fulfill its commitment it had made in the 1975 Accord that was framed between Sheikh Abdullah and Indira Gandhi. And no wonder the National Conference will include restoration of autonomy in its poll manifesto and use it fully during its pre-poll campaign. What could help the NC to woo back voters in the Valley are some of the views of Sheikh Nazir on various issues. He believes that Mohd. Maqbool Bhat, a founder member of the JKLF, was a worker of the NC and absolves the NC led State Government of any responsibility for the killing of Afzal Guru, Parliament attack convict. Sheikh Nazir has said that New Delhi killed Guru and the state Government was neither informed about it nor Omar could do anything in saving Guru's life. What can be music to the ears of people in Kashmir is Sheikh Nazir's views on handling of protest rallies and other militancy related incidents. He believes that those civilians killed in Kashmir during protest rallies or during encounters between the security forces and militants have fallen to the bullets of the Army and paramilitary forces and not to the police firing.
The NC leader does not believe that Muslims ousted Pandits from the Kashmir valley. He is of the firm opinion that Jagmohan, who he claims had been appointed by Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir had been instrumental in helping Pandits to migrate to the plains. He also does not support the idea of Pandits being rehabilitating in a satellite town in Kashmir. His views may be berated by Pandits but could find support in some section of people in the Kashmir valley. Were Muslims not killed in Kashmir? Were only Pandits killed? If a few Pandits were killed why this hue and cry. Does anyone have the count how many Kashmiris were killed? If they blame Farooq Abdullah and Muslims of Kashmir, they should come forward and say so. Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar have rightly rejected the concept of satellite towns for the return of Pandits. They can come to their respective places but they cannot be given separate settlements. Pandits sold their properties in Kashmir. They are also taking aid from the Government of India. Kashmiri Muslims did not oust them. Pandits have only one point agenda that is to mint money from wherever they can. NC passed a 'Migrant Property Distress Sale Act' resolution in the Legislative Assembly yet Pandits sold everything only to mint money. Government of India, with the help of Mufti Sayeed, appointed Jagmohan as Governor of Kashmir. It was Jagmohan who provided SRTC vehicles to take Pandits out of Kashmir. And Omar or Farooq Abdullah needs to shed light on Sheikh Nazir's views on various contentious issues so that it becomes clear whether whatever Sheikh Nazir has said are an expression of policy of National Conference' or they are a part of his personal sermon.
