Alleging week security cover, langar operator packs up

Kathua, July 23: Alleging weak security cover to the volunteer organizations operating community kitchens (langers) for lakhs of Amaranth pilgrims visiting the state annually, Jai Shiv Deep Sewa Mandal, a Punjab-based langar organization, today announced its packing up, citing the Baltal incident in which langar operators were beaten up and their stalls burnt by some locals.
The organization will not provide its service in Jammu and Kashmir in view of the weak security arrangements, said executive members of organization.
While addressing media persons, Vipin Nayar, Vikas Chapra and Ajay Singh, all members of the organisation, said they would not provide service in Jammu and Kashmir in view of the weak security arrangements to voluntary organizations who were vulnerable to attacks by the "fanatic" forces during the annual yatra of Shri Amarnath ji.
Citing example of the recent Baltal incident, they said, "Tall claims about the time and again review of security scenario by the state government and administration stand exposed after the recent Baltal incident.'
Jai Shiv Deep Sewa Mandal Amritsar" had installed its langar by the National Highway near Kharote Morh for the Amarnath pilgrims and was offering free food to the pilgrims.
"J&K police has failed to control a mob belonging to a particular community that attacked the base camp and targeted a langar operational at Baltal," they said, adding, "The state government succumbed to the pressure tactics of certain elements opposing yatra and booked langarwalas and some jawans of paramilitary forces instead of taking action against hooligans.
This shows the bias and prejudice approach of state government towards the pilgrims.
Because of all this, we have decided to pack up and move back homes."
They said if the things wouldn't get better they would never organize any langar in the state in future as their family members "remain worried about their well-being whenever they visit the state for langars during the Amarnath yatra days".
