Desperate to save his sinking ship, Omar trying to again rake up AFSPA issue | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 24: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is desperately taking up confrontation with the Modi Government at the Centre to save his "sinking ship". He said in the recent past that the "Centre will still find excuse to retain Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) even if all the guns fall silent in the state". He made this statement even after Centre had categorically stated that time is not ripe for the revocation of the AFSPA from the State. The statement of the Modi Government was in line with the previous Government which also didn't connect to the demand of the Chief Minister. Omar had about two years back put all his political eggs in the basket of AFSPA but without much success. He has since then carefully and in a calculated way started taking out these eggs one by one and then put them on other political constituent but he failed again and success remained a distant dream for him. The Chief Minister, though after some public posturing about his anger decided to not to speak about it as he was enjoying full support of the Congress high command on other issues. Omar feels that the public posturing of antagonism with the BJP could bring him some political dividends in the Valley, where his party has lost all three Lok Sabha seats. He tried to show it during the visit of Modi to the Katra. However, he is not gaining much success on his this account. And, to his much discomfit, BJP has gradually started getting support in the Valley with some prominent figures most likely to join it. Omar is also deliberately not bringing in the focus on developments in Afghanistan and other parts of the world. He is also trying to take away the focus on the dangers India faces from anti-India forces making moves to upset the peace and shoring up their energies to destablise the country. |
