Issue white paper to prove Jammu not being discriminated against | Dismissing nationalists as divisive | | Rustam JAMMU, July 24: The National Conference, which has been getting the maximum possible support of the Congress to perpetrate injustice after injustice on the people of Jammu and Ladakh, on Wednesday again said that the Omar Abdullah-led coalition Government has all along ensured equitable development of all the regions and it remains committed to pursuing the same policy. "The State under the leadership of Omar Abdullah is passing through an unprecedented era of progress in all the spheres of life. Development of backward and remote areas has remained the main focus of Government's policy frame work and planning parameters," it said, and added that "the present Government has embarked on a well planned strategy to bring improvement in all sectors on modern lines and that all available resources are being pooled to fructify these plans as per the urges and aspirations of the people". The NC, in addition, cautioned the people against the "divisive forces". By divisive forces, the NC didn't mean the forces represented by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others of his ilk; it meant those who have been crying for justice for Jammu and Ladakh since decades now and doing all that they could to defeat the divisive politics being indulged in by parties like the NC. It is absurd that a party that opposes the Indian Constitution, the Indian laws and the Indian institutions and denounces the Army and those involved in the anti-insurgency operations in the Valley and elsewhere in the state claims that it is secular and dismisses the nationalists and the suffering sections of the society in the state as divisive. This has been its stand all through, notwithstanding the fact that it has been consistently urging New Delhi to appreciate its communal demand and grant greater autonomy to the state so that it could impose its regressive ideology on the unwilling people of Jammu and Ladakh and some other sections in the Valley. It has consistently dismissed as anti-national the demand in Jammu for the state's reorganization and demand in Jammu for the UT status. The NC claims that it has never discriminated between the regions and that its whole policy is based on the principle of justice and equity. But the official records speak otherwise and establish beyond any shadow of doubt that Jammu and Ladakh have never got their due share in the state's political and economic processes. There are reports available indicating how systematically Jammu and Ladakh were rendered ineffective and unreal. Not just this, the Assembly papers also make it abundantly clear that the share of Jammu and Ladakh in service sector, or for that matter in all the sectors, is just negligible and that it is Jammu that has been contributing more revenue to the state exchequer. Even the Congress, which is part of the Government, has umpteen times admitted that Jammu province was being treated unfairly. The demands in Jammu and Ladakh ranging from regional development board to regional council to statehood to UT status to separate Chief Minister and separate Assembly and so on is a proof that the people of these two regions are fed up with the Kashmiri-dominated and Valley-centric ruling elite. As late as on July 20, 2014, some Congress leaders accused the state Government of ignoring the Jammu interest. One of the causes responsible for the defeat of the Congress in the Lok Sabha election was, it needs to be noted, the growing discontent in Jammu province. The NC cannot befool the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region anymore. It must issue a white paper on what the NC-led Government did for Kashmir, for Jammu and for Ladakh during the past five and a half years and the white paper should cover all the departments. Besides, the white paper should also reflect how much revenue Jammu generated and how much revenue Kashmir generated during this period. The time of vague statements has gone; it's time to come out with hard facts which should speak for themselves. |
