Post Friday prayers protests lead to injuries to 11 persons, people express solidarity with Palestinians | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, July 25: Protests broke out in some parts of summer capital of the state and other districts after the Friday prayers. At least 11 persons sustained injuries in these incidents with police resorting to lathi-charge and smoke shelling. Soon after the culmination of Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid, scores of youth took out a protest march against the Israeli aggression on Palestinians. The protesters raised slogans against Israel and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine. They were carrying banners and placards while raising protest against the Israeli action. The protesters burnt a flag of Israel during the protest demonstrations. As soon as the protesting youth reached near Khawaja Bazar the huge contingent of police and security forces personnel stopped them in moving ahead. This led to ding dong battles between the two sides and the same carried on for some time. While the youth pelted stones on police and security forces personnel; the later retaliated first by cane-charge followed by lobbing of smoke shells. The situation remained tense in the area with both sides sticking to their own stand. In the incident two protesters and a policeman sustained injuries. However, the injuries were minor and no one is serious among them. In the Hassanabad locality of the Rainawari area protests broke out after police stopped a group of protesters from moving ahead. The protesters were raising slogans against Israel and they wanted to move towards the city centre when they were stopped by the police. The police action did not go well with the protesters and they lodged strong protests. The policemen resorted to cane-charge and smoke shelling on the protesters. The police action led to injuries to three persons, but no one is serious. The incident led to panic in the area and the normal activities came to a standstill for some time in the area. Protest rallies against Israel and in support of Palestinians were also carried out in the different areas of Srinagar city. People in large numbers came out in areas like Abi Guzar, Maisuma and Gaw Kadal and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine where more than 800 civilians have been killed in bombing of Israeli forces. In South Kashmir's Tral town five persons including a police officer were injured in clashes that occurred after the Friday prayers. Immediately after prayers scores of persons took to streets and carried out strong protest demonstrations against the Israeli action. The protesters raised slogans in favour of Palestinians and against Israel. The protesters clashed with police and both the sides got engaged in ding-dong battles. The protesters pelted stones on policemen with the later retaliating by cane-charge and smoke shelling. The situation remained tense in the area and normalcy returned after some time. Similar protests were also reported from Chadoora, Pulwama, Baramulla and Sopore. However, these processions culminated peacefully. Meanwhile, lakhs of people converged at different mosques and shrines across Kashmir valley as Juma-tul-vida (last Friday of holy month of Ramadhan) was observed. The biggest congregation was held at Jamia Masjid, Srinagar where more than one lakh people offered the Friday prayers. Similar congregations were held in different places of Central, South and North Kashmir respectively. |
