Early Times Report

Budgam, July 25: After encroaching upon several hundred kanals of state land in Budgam, the strong land mafia lobby is now busy constructing a road through the famous Doodh Ganga nallah near Chadoora town of Budgam district in central Kashmir. The land mafia has been actively working in Budgam for the last many years with the official patronage of some senior ministers, police and district administration. The authorities particularly the district administration are a mute spectator to the vandalization of Doodh Ganga as sources alleged that heavy kickbacks have gone into the pockets of revenue, local municipal officials, and police. According to the information available with Early Times, a strong group of land brokers of Chadoora area have purchased a large chunk of land on the outskirts of Chadoora town which is located along the banks of Doodh Ganga canal.
Sources say that the land mafia had purchased the said land at a very low price as it did not have any road connectivity. In order to earn huge profits, the mafia has now managed to construct a road from the main town to this area as result of which the Doodh Ganga canal has been almost choked.
The work on the construction of a road is under process from the eastern side of the nallah by trimming the banks of the Doodh Ganga. Sources say that land mafia had purchased the said land for meagre Rs 3 to 4 lakh per kanal in Doulat Pora and Hanji Gund areas and now planned to sell it for Rs 30 to 40 lakh per kanal and to ensure the execution of this dirty game, the district administration, municipal committee, Chadoora and police are alleged to be fully cooperating with the land mafia.
Sources alleged that the authorities concerned had taken a huge commission before allowing the road construction work to take off.
"The said land mafia is active for the past 5-6 years and has already converted hundreds of kanals of agriculture and state land into shopping complexes in Budgam and Chadoora towns and created a mess there.
The Doodh Ganga nallah has been encroached at dozens of places in Chadoora town as the authorities have allowed construction of many residential and commercial complexes on its banks " said Mohammad Haneef, a resident of Chadoora.
While talking to Early Times, a senior official from Flood Control Department accepted that Doodh Ganga nallah has been encroached by the land mafia in Chadoora town of Budgam but claimed that a notice had been issued to the people involved in the construction of the illegal road. He further said that within few days, a challan would be produced before the local court under the State Water Conservation Act.
