Illegal soil excavation continues in Baramulla despite ban

BARAMULLA, July 25: Despite official ban on soil extraction, some of the local groups associated with the land selling trade in Baramulla district of north Kashmir have been illegally excavating soil that has resulted in the destruction of topography of the local Kerawas here. According to sources, that the Mafia excavates soil in Choora, Renge Moad, Delina Singhpora and Sangrama areas of the district in broad day light without any official check. The residents of Sangrama and Delina of Baramulla Thesil blame that some soil extractors who are banned by the authorities few months back continue to extract soil from agricultural land due to which they are facing several problems. Ghulam Rasool Mir of Sangrama said that these land Mafia has a special permission from higher authorities to excavate soil from these chosen areas, and more they have granted permission from concerned authorities. After three years of soil extraction and subsequent problems faced by people in the area, authorities imposed ban on any such activity few months back but residents allege that these extractors remain unmoved and their number has increased instead. "There are around 20 tippers working for this work in the region which ply day and night," Mir said. Eye witnesses told Early Times that, several tractors and tippers on Friday were excavating soil illegal at these places. Interestingly at Sangrama, where the mafia was excavating soil, there is a four point way and Forest check post also. "Several trucks were loaded and while some were on the way from Sopore. Locals of Delina Singpora said that soil extraction in the region has resulted in environmental hazards as well. Farmers in the area said these groups are not only doing their business illegally but also act as mafias for other illegal activities. Senior citizens of these areas believe tippers are source of air pollution as well which has led to several health problems among people. "They don't adhere to speed limits and are always in hurry in order to make maximum shifts for which they are paid," said Mohammad Ramzan. However a top official from Deputy Commissioner's office, wishing not to be named said that, "It is illegal to excavate soil. Who so ever has given the permission to these Mafias for excavating the soil must be punished and stern action should be taken against them. This is a serious issue and the illegal excavation won't be allowed now. He said action will be taken against culprit's official said.
