Poor governance takes toll on health resorts | | | Shakeel A Khan
GANDERBAL, July 27: Poor governance has taken toll on almost all the tourist spots which are dying a slow death. It is the government sponsored destruction which has marred the natural beauty and it will be in the very near future that Kashmir Valley won't be on the world tourism map. Sonamarg, which is one of the most beautiful tourist spots of the Valley, is fast losing its identity, thanks to the people in power. The government is watching the interference of the mean people in the fragile environs of the Sonamarg, forgetting about the fact that this place is the home to the Thajiwas Glacier, which ensures the sustained supply of drinking water to the lakhs of people. It is the short sightedness of the government that it has virtually allowed the anti environment activities to be carried there. The Sonamarg development authority is nothing but an agency on the paper only, unaware about its responsibilities and it seems to have become a tool in the hands of the influential people. "In the rest of the world people are not only kept aware about the threats to the places which are fragile in nature but the concerned agencies there put in place the life support system so as to ensure the safety of these places. But in our state there is no provision for such facilities," said some people at Kangan who were talked to by the Early Times. These people argued that it is not in the priorities of the government to think for the safety of the places like Sonamarg. These people asked as to what happened to the world famous Dal lake, the glory of which could not be restored despite the fact that huge amount has been spent for the same purpose. As per these people, the money meant for the preservence of these places, runs into some pockets. The government seems to be so much helpless that it is at the disposal of those mean and haughty persons who are hell-bent upon destroying the place which are very much important as far as the people of the state are concerned. "How much serious is our government to keep the environs of the state safe and to preserve the natural resources for the future generations can be gauged by the fact it has let the anti environ structures to be raised in the environmentally very fragile place of the Sonamarg," said Imtiyag Ahmad from Ganderbal, while talking to Early Times. As per Imtiyaz, the construction of hotels and other buildings is going on the war footing which vindicates that the government has allowed human interference in this part of the paradise. Also, as per Imtiyaz, such government sponsored destruction is going to deprive the wild animals of their natural habitat. |
