TANGAMARG, July 27: Police arrested five members of a family including the husband of pregnant woman who was forced to take some poisonous substance in Tangmarag area of Baramulla district on Sunday.
According to sources that, a woman from Traran village of North Kahsmir's Tangmarag area was married to Bilal Ahmad Malik from Hariwatnu Chek area.
Sources added that Bilal and his family were frequently forcing the woman (name with held) to collect money from her father to assist them in constructing a new house.
"Once the woman managed to arrange money for the in-laws but this time her father was not in a position to help her, as a result she was tortured by her in-laws and was forced to take some poisonous substance," sources said.
Early Times have learnt from sources that the woman is battling for life in SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.
Cousin Brother of Rehana (name with held) Irshad Ahmad Bhat said that "we gave her golden ornaments worth of rupees 10 lakh and other household gifts for bride and for the family members which were very expensive.
Few years back she had approached the state commission for women, a government body meant to protect women's rights. Her husband and his family members agreed to start a new life in front of the officials, but thing never changed and remained same as it was before few months, Irshad alleged.
Sociologists believe that, "Dowry is prohibited, and laws have been enacted to punish guilty, under the Jammu and Kashmir Dowry Restraint Act (India), a person can be booked and punished for taking or giving dowry, but the situation on the ground tells a different story.
"According to the national crime records bureau, out of 9565 cases of dowry-related deaths in India in 2014, 19 were reported in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2013 there were 13 dowry deaths in Kashmir only, and many cases go unreported they said.
Meanwhile Police have registered a case after locals staged a massive protest against the family and demanded their arrest.
Police official from Tangmarg said that the accused family members Ali Muhammad Malik, his sons Shakoor Malik, Rashid Malik, Mansoor Malik and Bilal Malik went in to hiding to evade arrest, however, police launched a hunt and nabbed them.
SDPO Tangmarg Anwar-ul-Haq said they have registered a FIR number 63/2014 under section 409,498 of RPC against the accused family members and investigation is going on.
