Authorities act against alleged Land Mafia at Budgam | Illegal road construction stopped | | Early Times Report
Budgam, July 29: Authorities in Budgam district of central Kashmir have initiated action against the local land mafia who had encroached the Doodh Ganga canal in Chadoora area of the district. The department of Flood Control, according to sources, has presented a challan in the court of Judicial Magistrate at Chadoora in this regard and the work has been stopped. The land mafia, after encroaching upon several hundred kanals of state land in Budgam, had been constructing a full fledged road through the famous Doodh Ganga nallah near Chadoora. It has been actively working in Budgam for the last many years with the official patronage. The authorities, particularly the district administration, were mute spectators to this illegal activity but they swung into action this newspaper published a story on this issue last week. It is pertinent to mention here that a strong group of land brokers of Chadoora area purchased land on the outskirts of Chadoora town along the banks of Doodh Ganga canal. Sources said the land mafia had purchased the land at a very low price as it did not have any road connectivity. In order to earn huge profits, the mafia managed to construct a road from the main town to this area and while it was being done, the Doodh Ganga canal was almost chocked and a road construction is under process through the eastern side of the nallah by trimming the banks of the Doodh Ganga. Sources say that land mafia had purchased the said land for meagre Rs 3 to 4 lakhs per kanal in Doulat Pora and Hanji Gund areas but now the land mafia was eyeing to sell the same land for Rs 30 to 40 lakhs per kanal. The local residents have hailed the action taken by Flood Control authorities against the alleged land grabbers who are alleged to have already converted hundreds of kanals of agriculture and state land into shopping complexes in Budgam and Chadoora towns in the last five to six years which has created a mess in these towns. The Doodh Ganga nallah has been encroached at dozens of places in Chadoora town as some residential houses have also come up along its banks.
