Congress fears losing ground in Assembly polls | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: The Congress leadership is deeply disturbed over the expected "poor" performance of the party in the coming elections. The senior leadership of the party is meeting soon to ideate some issues to get connected to the people and also prove that it can do a lot for the people of Jammu region, where the party has main base, than can be expected from BJP. "After the drubbing in the Parliamentary elections, the party is still on the sliding path. The ground reports suggest that party could lose more seats in the Assembly elections if this trend continues. A serious course correction is needed immediately if the party wants to remain in race for power," said a senior Congress leader. The party had already suffered reverses in the 2008 Assembly elections and again in the 2014 Parliamentary election. The BJP had gained in both these elections. The party feels that being out of the power, it doesn't have much leverage and with the ties snapped with the NC, it doesn't have any more say in the governance. The party is now banking on the issues which can be more appealing to the people especially of the Jammu region. It's for this reason that party is floating the idea of regional council for the Jammu region and also made the CM accept its demand for the settlement of the refugees' issue. The party leadership is also making up a strategy to showcase that Congress has served the Jammu region much more better than can be expected by the BJP, which the party is saying now toeing the line of appeasement of the separatists. In the valley, the party's game plan is to appeal the voter that only this party can stop and counter Modi, whom it had projected as the most hated figure of the Muslim community. "Both NC and PDP can never ever counter Modi. And the fact that while NC was part of BJP at the Centre in the past, now PDP is closing bridges with the saffron party. So it's the Congress which can effectively counter BJP and people in Kashmir, we believe, will respond to it," said the party leader. |
