Post Eid prayers protests lead to injuries to a dozen in Kashmir | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, July 29: Around one dozen persons including some policemen sustained injuries as protests broke out in many areas of Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir valley after the congregational prayers organized in connection with Eid-ul-Fitr that was celebrated today. Reports said that trouble broke out in the Eidgah area of downtown Srinagar after groups of people clashed with police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel immediately after the Eid prayers. The groups of people were protesting against the action of Israeli forces in the Gaza strip against the Palestinians. After offering Eid prayers groups of people mostly comprising of youth raised anti-Israel and pro-Palestine slogans in the Eidgah area. These people were also carrying banners and placards in their hands and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine. The protesters could not control their emotions and clashed with police and CRPF personnel. The protesters pelted stones on the police and CRPF personnel and the ding dong battle carried on for some time. Police and CRPF personnel lobbed scores of smoke shells on the protesters in order to disperse them. The entire Eidgah area and the adjacent ones were filled with smoke with nothing visible on the ground. Clashes in the Eidgah area reached the adjacent areas like Sekidafar, Safa Kadal, Kawdara, Nawa Kadal, Rajouri Kadal and Nowhatta. Scores of people assembled in these areas and raised protest against the Israeli action in Gaza strip. They also pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel with smoke shells being lobbed in order to disperse them. In the uptown areas like Maisuma, Hyderpora and Humhama were witnessed with people registering their protest against the Israeli action. While the protesters pelted stones on the police and CRPF personnel the action was retaliated by lobbing of smoke shells. However, the intensity of protests was less than those witnessed in the areas of the old city. One person was injured after being hit by a smoke shell in the Janglat Mandi area in the South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Trouble broke out after a large group of people after offering Eid prayers protested against the Israeli action. The protesters pelted stones on the police and the security forces. The youth was injured after being hit by a smoke shell lobbed by police and security forces personnel. Protests have also been reported from the different areas of Central, South and North Kashmir. Groups of people assembled outside mosques after the Eid prayers and protested against the Israeli action. However, the protesters dispersed peacefully with no untoward incident being reported from these places. Meanwhile, Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety across Kashmir valley. Huge congregations of people converged at different mosques and shrines in order to offer the Eid prayers. People exchanged greetings on the occasion of Eid and the children received Eidi and gifts from their parents and other near ones. Big Eid congregations were held at Hazratbal and Eidgah followed by congregations at other places both in Srinagar and other districts of the Kashmir valley. Authorities placed separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest. |
