Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 30: Utterbeni remains cut-off from rest of Jammu and Purmandal area over the failure of Government to renovate the bridge on Devika River which has been damaged by floods some years back. The bridge has been a link to world famous Hindu religious place to other parts of Jammu region and Country. Some famous temples of Lord Shiva built during ancient times in Utterbeni and Purmandal twin religious centres are being visited by thousands of pilgrims not only from state but other parts of country every year.
The rush is seen especial on the occasion of Shiv Ratri, Amawasya and Puranmashi when thousands of pilgrims throng these religious places. However the Yatris face problems in visiting Utterbeni for last some years after the bridge was damaged by flash floods and it was lying in a precarious manner. The authorities also closed this bridge for heavy vehicles soon after the damage and this way no bus carrying pilgrims is allowed to cross the bridge and this way pilgrims had to face problems as they have to cover some distance on foot to visit the holy temples of Lord Shiva. The bridge also links Utterbeni to Vijaypur Samba on one side and Jammu on another side. But after its damage pilgrims from Kathua Samba Vijaypur other areas of the twin districts have to come via Sainik colony or Chowadi and first visit Purmandal and then come to Utterbeni.
This way they have to cover a large distance. Moreover the shopkeepers and basiners community people can't bring their luggage in trucks as no heavy vehicle can cross the bridge.
The bridge was inaugurated by then chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and crores of rupees were spent on its construction say local people. They said but two years after its inauguration it was damaged by flash floods in Devika river. The people accuse the authorities for not properly designing the bridge which led to its damage in flash floods. Had the authorities properly designed the bridge it would have not been damaged, said Ram Kumar a local resident. Kumar said last year Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah visited the area and assured immediate reconstruction of the bridge but to no avail. The people are demanding that a commission of Inquiry be constituted that why the bridge was damaged and why the same was not considered while designing it. The people are also demanding immediate renovation of bridge as it is a lifetime for one lakh population in the area.
