Valley faces threat of epidemic | Foul smell becomes un-manageable | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, July 30: With no provision of the techniques to dispose of the waste, foul smell emanating from heaps of garbage may cause an epidemic. Given the prevailing hot conditions, the situation has taken an ugly turn, leaving people worried about their health. The carelessness of the SMC has created havoc and it has become difficult for the people to venture out of their homes. One cannot afford to walk on the roads and through lanes without a mask. This has posed a potential threat to the health of the people. The cleanliness of the roads isn't being done on the daily basis, thus putting a question mark on the efficacy of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. The officers of the SMC hardly bother about their job thus subjecting the people to innumerable difficulties. "The SMC isn't in the good books because it is not giving serious thoughts to its job. Garbage remains littered for many days together, forcing the people to keep the windows of their houses shut even during the scorching heat of July and August," said Abdul Gaffar from Srinagar while talking to the Early Times. As per Gaffar, this problem has given rise to many problems. The staunch from the heaps of garbage breeds mosquitoes and flies, hence spreading disease. The fruit and the meat shops become the feeding grounds for the mosquitoes and flies as these items are consumed by the people on the daily basis, as Gaffar went on saying. In the areas where garbage remains untouched for many days, people crave for fresh air. People feel suffocation on account of the staunch produced from the piles of the garbage. In such conditions, people have no taste for the life. Some people even don't want to return to their shelters. "The biggest problem that the carelessness of the SMC has created is that the garbage invites a lot dogs who then make the lives of the people hellish. It restricts the movement of the people, particularly during the dark hours as the cases of dog bites on the daily basis prove this all," said some shopkeepers at Chota Bazaar Srinagar, who were talked to by the Early Times. People argue that the funds meant for maintaining the cleanliness, run into the pockets of the influential persons who aren't held accountable by the government. The condition of the city and the adjutant areas is deteriorating very fast. Mohammad Akram while sharing his ideas with the Early Times was of the opinion that the people are paying the price for living within the municipality limits as according to him it is not the garbage only, but the chocked drains as well that have created havoc in the valley. |
