Private security guard critically injured in militant attack near SMHS hospital | Cordon launched to nab assailant | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, July 31: Panic gripped the Kaka Sarie area in downtown Srinagar after a suspected militant fired upon a private security guard outside the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital in the afternoon today. The security guard is battling for his life in the hospital. Reports said that an unidentified gunman appeared near the chemist shops outside the SMHS hospital and fired at the security guard who was purchasing medicines from one of the chemist shops. The security guard sustained injuries in the incident and was immediately rushed to the SMHS hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be critical in the hospital. The firing incident led to panic in the area and the people ran hither-thither for their safety. The people who were purchasing medicines from the chemist shops ran for their safety. Some of the owners of the chemist shops also fled from the scene while leaving their shops open. There was chaos and confusion in the Kaka Sarie and adjacent areas following the firing incident. Reports said the security official identified as Nazir Ahmad Shah resident of Maidanpora, Lolab in frontier district of Kupwara was working in the Border Security Force (BSF). He had retired from his services in the BSF some months back and joined a private security agency. The security agency had been entrusted with the responsibility of the security of the SMHS hospital. Nazir was the head of the security of the hospital and was assigned the job of overall monitoring of the security set up in the hospital. He had gone out to purchase medicines during the day and faced the attack from the militant in the area falling outside the casualty of the SMHS hospital. Nazir received two bullets in his neck and was immediately admitted in the SMHS Hospital for treatment where his condition is said to be critical. Soon after the attack police and security forces cordoned off the area in order to nab the militant. However, no one was arrested with the attacker yet to be identified and arrested by the forces. A police spokesman said that an unknown militant shot at and injured a private hospital security guard of SMHS hospital Srinagar. The spokesman said that a private hospital security guard Nazir Ahmad Peer son of Abdul Gani Peer resident of Lolab, Kupwara was shot at and injured by unknown militant near the hospital. The spokesman said that Nazir was shifted to the hospital. Police has registered a case in this regard and investigation has been taken up. Today's attack is the third major militant attack in the Kashmir valley during the past one week. Two cops were killed in separate militant attacks in South and North Kashmir on July 25 and during the intervening night of July 25 and 26 at Bijbehara and Sopore respectively. |
