BANDIPORA, July 31: Clashes broke out between two political groups over drinking water in Sonawari Constituency of Bandipora district in north Kashmir on Thursday. Locals believe the area has not seen much development since the leadership of Omar Abdullhah. According to the sources that, "residents of Gund-Jahangir area of Sonawari is facing shortage of drinking water from past some days as the electricity generator at a local water-pump shed is out of order and everyday government water tankers fetch water to the area. Mohammad Ashraf Bhat of Gund Jahangir said, "When people saw water tankers coming, everyone tried to get water first which ensued in to a battle between NC and PDP supporters." We requested the concerned Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for water supply however, they supplied some five tankers of water to the area," Bhat said. The situation turned ugly with the supporters of one group fighting with supporters of another he said. Local resident of Sonawari Constituency Abdul Gani said that, "the village has more or less a population of around 18,000 that includes more than 1200 families.
The area has not seen much development since the leadership of Omar Abdullah. "Daily free water supply is a distant dream for the villagers here despite the fact that 70 per cent of water supply is available for the village. It is unfortunate that in 21st century, we don't have drinking water facality for which we visited the concerned authorities many times in past with our complaints regarding shortage of drinking water but all in vein, Gani alleged. Another Local of an area Mohammad Shafi said that, "NC Sarpanch took three water tankers to his home and directed one of the tankers to his relatives which show the Gundagardi and highhandedness of the authorities who allowed him to do the same." "When people saw the 'scenes' being created by the Sarpanch, they objected. The accused Sarpanch belongs to ruling National Conference, Shafi said. Gund Jahangir village is located in Sonawari Constituency of North Kashmir's Bandipora District. The village has remained the victim of official apathy in terms of development.
A well qualified youth of an area wishing not to be named said that, Panchs and Sarpanchs of PDP even urge the government to refrain from playing political tactics in order to win the hearts of the people. "Even elections are also approaching. Even people have lost their faith and present ruling government is responsible for that. He asked how these Ministers will approach people for their votes in future. "National Conference party has already lost its image in every part of Jammu and Kashmir, especially in Bandipora district and now the party workers are doing much to win the hearts of common masses which is a distant dream for them he added.
