Jammu business community begins feeling impact, seeks adequate compensation | Train reaches Katra | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 31: Business community of Jammu has begun feeling negative impact of extension of train service to Katra. They are peeved over the fact that tourist as well as pilgrim arrival in Jammu city has shown steep drop with most people preferring to reach Katra directly. From Katra, state government has made requisite arrangements for onward travel of the pilgrims and tourists from across the country to Srinagar and Ladakh. Business fraternity has begun raising the issue on various platforms. In this context, a deputation of Jammu Tourism Action Committee (JTAC) which included Inderjeet Khajuria, convener JTCA, Ravi Mahajan, chairman, JPVM and Pawan Gupta general secretary AJHLA met Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and apprised him about problems being faced by the tourism related traders. The delegation said that due to extension of rail link to Katra from other parts of country, tourism related business fraternity has suffered huge loss in business. It said that they are unable to make two ends meet and most are at the verge of starvation. He further said that a serious thought on the part of government and administration has to be given to save future of suffering business community. Business fraternity is demanding that Jammu should be made independent tourist destination for attraction of the tourists so that stakeholders are compensated for losses they are suffering due to rail link extension. He further suggested that Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) should be retained at General Bus Stand, Jammu for encouraging tourism potential besides being convenient for tourists and pilgrims. They are worried that despite assurances given by Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Jammu based ministers; Jammu Development Authority (JDA) has submitted adverse report to the High Court. They have said that in the report of JDA, the Inter State Bus Terminal has been converted into Inter City Bus Stand at General Bus Stand, which has created chaos and problems for business community and it should be rectified at the earliest by submitting a fresh report to the High Court. They have requested the state government to take a lenient view and ensure that ISBT is not shifted out of Jammu city. Though the state government has assured them of finding a solution for retention of Inter State Bus Terminal at Bus Stand, Jammu after convening a meeting with concern authorities but steps in this direction are yet to be taken. Government has promised to constitute a committee. They have said that the monitoring committee would look after progress of ongoing Mega Projects in Jammu including Artificial Lake, Jammu Cable Car, Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex, Hari Singh Park, Wild Life Zoo at Manda and Border Tourism. Government has said that the committee would comprise of concerned HoD; Commissioner, JMC; VC JDA and five members among suffering traders. Business committee has further pleaded for making requisite arrangements for Kailash Yatra at Bhaderwah which starts on August 14. They have further urged Divisional Commissioner to personally visit Bhaderwah to take stock of arrangements which have been made for Yatra. Divisional Commissioner has agreed to personally visit Bhaderwah and overlook arrangements for Yatra. |
