Thanks to Govt apathy, Pashmina shawl loses its sheen

SRINAGAR, Aug 1: Like everything, the Pashmina shawl has also fallen to the official apathy, leaving thousands of people associated with this trade uncertain about their future. The government has failed over the years to address the grievances of the people who are skillful in shawl weaving. Pashmina shawl from valley, which has won the praise world over has lost the credibility, thanks to the ill attitude of the people in power. There are many factors which are responsible for the decline in this trade and the sale of the fake Pashmina shawls has done the real damage.
One of the factors responsible for the non- availability of the pure Pashmina shawls is that the raw material for the same isn't readily available. Secondly, the people who have the craze for the Pashmina shawls haven't got the knowledge to differentiate between the real and the false one.
"Such was the elegance of the Pashmina shawl that when it was first introduced in Europe, it became a craze there, and the people became mad for it as history reveals it. In those days there was no compromise on the quality of the product and this particular fact was the secret behind the success of Pashmina Shawl business, said Tariq Ahmad from Srinagar, who deals in Pashmina Shawl business. As per Tariq, Kashmiri artisans have failed to keep up this tradition as the government is doing nothing to encourage the people who are skillful in the embroidery. The government, as Tariq went on saying, has got no sympathy for these artisans, who see dark days ahead in their life. "The government has left us at the mercy of the almighty and has no pity on our plight. The people in power have left us to die. Seriousness of the government can be gauged from the fact that there is no effective mechanism in place, nor has it the plans for the future," said some shawl businessmen from the Soibugh area of the Budgam district.
In India, fake Pashmina shawls are sold in the name of the Kashmiri Pashmina Shawl hence doing damage to this branded item from Kashmir, which is for sure to deprive this business community of the livelihood.
The sale of the fake Pashmina shawls, illegally made on the machines in Amritsar, is going on unabated and without any quality control thus bringing bad name to the real Kashmiri shawls. The Kashmiri Pashmina shawl is the masterly crafted piece produced by the Kashmiri artisans through their hard work. Despite this fact, it has lost its glory because the government hasn't taken protective measures. In fact the government is watching this all like the mute spectator.
