Delhi ignoring Kashmir to appease Jammu, says Congress
Kashmiri leadership and IIT
8/1/2014 11:52:48 PM
Rustam
JAMMU, Aug 1: The Kashmir-based Congress leadership is not happy with the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre. Its grouse against the Central Government is that it is ignoring Kashmir and pampering Jammu for vote bank politics. On Thursday, it accused the NDA Government of "fueling divide" in Jammu and Kashmir and bemoaned that the Kashmir valley has been "completely" left-out in the union budget. The Congress accused the NDA Government of ignoring Kashmir on the floor of the Rajya Sabha and said "bounties were showered on other regions" (in this case Jammu and Ladakh). "The BJP Government gave an IIT to Jammu with an eye on the vote bank in the region, but couldn't offer anything to Kashmir which doesn't have a flourishing public sector," Congress MP from Kashmir told the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, NC leader and J&K CM Omar Abdullah, besides many other Kashmiri leaders and commentators, had also questioned the decision of the Union Government to set up IIT in Jammu and accused it of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards the Valley overlooking the fact that Jammu is the nation's most underdeveloped, ignored and marginalized region.
The Congress MP not only condemned the Central Government for its decision to sanction one IIT for Jammu, which will be for the entire state and not exclusively for the Jammu youth, but also highlighted Kashmir saying it has suffered much during the past few decades. "Kashmir has suffered immensely by way of loss of life, property and resources during the turmoil and unfortunately, the Government of India has nothing to offer to the tormented people. The BJP seems to have shut its eyes on Kashmir…An impression is going around that being a Muslim majority state, J&K is being singled out for discrimination by the BJP Government…The 'discriminatory' union budget has set the alarm bells ringing for the 'secular' India," he said while speaking during the budget debate in the Rajya Sabha.
This is the attitude of the Kashmiri Congress leaders and it shows that it is as worse as the NC leadership for their attitude towards Jammu and Ladakh is concerned. The question is: Did this Congress MP from Kashmir take the Jammu Congress leadership into confidence before denouncing the decision of the Union Government to set up IIT in Jammu? The answer simply cannot be in the affirmative. The answer is a big No. After all, the Kashmiri leadership considers the Congress and NC leadership from Jammu as its slave. But more than that, the question to be asked is: Will the Jammu-based Congress leadership, including Congress Ministers, take up this issue with the concerned Congress MP, who holds a very important position in the JKPCC and is member of the AICC, and inform the Congress high command that the said MP has damaged the Congress' poll prospects in Jammu province with whose support the Congress has been enjoying political power in the state? Again, the answer could not be in the affirmative; the answer will be a big NO. For, the Jammu Congress leadership is weak, meek and not really committed to the Jammu's genuine cause. This is what the Congress workers at the grassroots level say and say it in the presence of Ambika Soni, Saif-ud-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad. Just recall what happened at the Congress' convention in Jammu on July 20 and you will draw right conclusion about the Congress Ministers and other senior Congress leaders from Jammu. This indifferent and casual attitude of the Jammu Congress leadership will not do. It has to assert and fight for the Jammu cause because it would also be in their own interest.
