India calling off talks leaves separatists red faced | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 19: India calling off Foreign Secretary level talks with Pakistan has put the Kashmiri separatists in a tight spot. The Narendra Modi led Government has made it clear to Pakistan that it has to choose between the separatists or India. The Government of India called off the talks, which were slated to be held on Aug 25 in Islamabad, to protest against the decision of the Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit to hold parleys with Kashmiri separatists ahead of the crucial talks. Pertinently, Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi had invited Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmed Shah and Mohammad Yasin Malik to Delhi for holding deliberations ahead of the Foreign Secretary level talks. However, India called off the talks soon after the Pakistan HC met Shabir Ahmed Shah. "India has made its policy clear that it cannot tolerate interference in its internal affairs. Separatists have been left red-faced as they stand exposed before the people. Their rhetoric about Pakistan helping their cause has suffered a huge set back," said a Kashmir University Professor. A political commentator while talking to Early Times said, "Modi Government has taken a bold decision by calling off talks. It has made it clear to Pakistan that India cannot compromise on Jammu and Kashmir. This move will help in clearing the misconception about Kashmir being an issue which needs to be resolved." He said if Pakistan wants to build cordial relations with India then it should "forget Kashmir" and move ahead. "Modi Government's move has sent a clear message to the neighboring country that India won't compromise on its sovereignty and doesn't want to hold talks for passing time, and for appeasing the international community," the commentator added. Sources told Early Times that soon after India announced that Foreign Secretary Sujata Singh won't travel to Islamabad to hold talks with her Pakistani counterpart Kashmiri separatists, who were camping in Delhi to meet the Pakistan High Commissioner, went into a "tizzy." "It is for the first time that India has acted tough otherwise Pakistan had made it a routine to hold talks with Kashmiri separatists ahead of any diplomatic level talks with India," said an analyst. He said till date separatists have held numerous rounds of talks with Pakistan leaders and officials but nothing has come out of it. "They (separatists) have been raising hollow slogans for the past two decades and had created an impression that India had softened its stand on Kashmir by allowing them to meet Pakistani leaders. Modi Government acting tough has punctured their claim. It will be very difficult for them to take people for a ride in future," the analyst added. The BJP's Kashmir spokesman Khalid Jehangir while talking to Early Times said, "They (separatists) have been visiting Pakistan consulate and Islamabad frequently for the past 22-years. Someone needs to ask them what have they achieved by doing so?" He said, "Separatists are accountable to people and not Pakistan. Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing the bloodbath for the past two decades and people are fed up of violence. If separatists are really concerned about the welfare of people they should come forward and contest the elections and prove their representative character. They (separatists) holding meaningless talks with Pakistan and its officials won't serve any purpose." A senior politician was of the opinion that separatists should hold talks with Indian leaders rather than "registering attendance" at Pakistan consulate. "They should stop day dreaming and realize that JK is an integral part of India and if they have grievances those can be addressed. Modi Government has made it clear that secessionism is not acceptable," he said. The politician said that "ambiguous Kashmir policy" of the previous Congress led UPA-regime pushed Jammu and Kashmir on brink. "Modi Government not allowing Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to meet separatists during his India visit, it asking United Nations Military Observer Group to vacate its office in Delhi and now Govt calling off the Foreign Secretary level talks has made its Kashmir policy clear." |
