| SKIMS teaching MBBS sans medical science facilities | | 10 departments defunct! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
Jammu, Aug 19: With requisite infrastructure and teaching faculty almost crippled in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, MBBS teaching in the college is virtually on crutches.
If the report of Medical Council of India (MCI) is any indication, the college has nothing on the name of infrastructure and teaching faculty. 10 departments are facing serious shortage of infrastructure with management doing little to address this grave issue and spending more time seemingly on convincing MCI that MBBS and other course in the college should not be derecognised since this could lead to further alienation of youth in Kashmir valley.
Director of the College Dr. Showkat Zargar who has remained in the news for all the wrong reasons has done little to infuse new life in SKIMS which was once regarded as the most prestigious institution of Kashmir valley. According to MCI report, Anatomy department of SKIMS is without cadaver. They have said that no cadavers are available in the college for MBBS dissection.
Further, there is no demonstration as well as embalming room in the Anatomy department. Band saw is not available. Cooling chambers are non-functional. Dissection hall is small and not suitable for dissection. Museum facilities are inadequate and not suited for MBBS students. Student lockers are not available, says the report of Medical Council of India (MCI).
The report further says that there are two draining facilities for the dissection tables which are closely placed and there is no space for students to move. The department is without requisite number of clerks or attendants. The physiology department of SKIMS is without demonstration rooms. Haematology and clinical physiology laboratory space is inadequate while there is no mammalian or amphibian laboratory in the institute. Paramedical staff is inadequate.
About the biochemistry department, MCI report has reiterated that there are no demonstration rooms and there are also no audio-visual aids. Same is the case with Pathology department which has no demonstration rooms. Besides, there is only 1 Histopathology laboratory available and there are no audiovisual aids. There is no cytology or morbid Anatomy laboratory.
The report further adds that the number of microscopes in the Pathology department are grossly inadequate. In the microbiology Laboratory, there are neither demonstration rooms nor do they have service laboratories. The department does not have a museum. Microscopes are also inadequate. Pharmacology department is also without demonstration room.
Museum of the pharmacology department is lacking in basic facilities. Paramedical staff is inadequate. In the forensic medicine department, research laboratory is non-functional. There is no autopsy room in the forensic department. Audiovisual aids are not available. In the community medicine department, demonstration room is inadequate. Museum facilities are inadequate.
The forensic department has no practical laboratory. There are also no audiovisual aids. The most vital Radiodiagnosis department has only 3 static X-ray machines are available against requirement of 5 as per regulations. There are only 3 mobile X-ray machines available against requirement of 4 as per regulations.
Capacity of 4 lecture theatres is only 90 against requirement of 120. Seating capacity in the central library is 50 against requirement of 200. There are only 52 journals available in the library against requirement of 100. Student's hostel accommodation is available for 90 students only against requirement of 225. MCI has on these grounds recommended for disallowing SKIMS to continue admitting 100 students for MBBS. |
