Will Modi-Sharif meeting take place on UN session sidelines in US? | | | Jammu, Aug 19 :Will Narendra Modi meet Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in US late next month? This question is being debated in public and political circles in Jammu and Kashmir following New Delhi's decision to call off the ensuing foreign secretary level talks. New Delhi's decision to cancel the Indo-Pakistan Foreign Secretary-level talks following the Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit's meeting with separatist Hurriyat leaders, has put a question mark over Modi-Sharif talks scheduled during the UN General Assembly in September. Though the ruling National Conference and the opposition PDP leadership is upset over the cancellation of bilateral talks, leaders belonging to BJP, Panthers Party, BSP, VHP and Jammu State Morcha have asked Modi not to accept any offer of talks from Nawaz Sharif during the UN session. Ashok Khajrua and Dr Nirmal Singh of the BJP,Harsh Dev Singh of Panthers Party and others said that It was an insult to Modi who had volunteered resumption of bilateral talks. In fact the proposed foreign secretary level talks were meant to fix the agenda for Modi-Nawaz Sharif parleys. They said Islamabad had not been sincere in meaningful talks with New Delhi and had it been so it would have asked troops, deployed on the LoC and IB in Jammu and Kashmir to stop resorting to unprovoked ceasefire violations. They said Islamabad sabotaged the proposed talks by inviting Kashmiri separatists to the Pak High commission in New Delhi. However, the PDP leaders said that the practice of inviting separatists by Pak High Commission officials has been in vogue for the last several years and it should have not provoked New Delhi to cancel the foreign secretary level talks. PDP leaders ,including Nizam-ud-in Bhat, said that India and Pakistan can strengthen cordial ties only after resolving the bilateral issues amicably through bilateral talks. Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Bhat said, "We want peaceful settlement of all the bilateral issues. If we have been talking to New Dellhi there should be no problem if we hold talks with Pak diplomats and officials." |
