SRINAGAR, Aug 20: Despite legislations, government has failed to evolve an effective mechanism to curb the menace of smoking in public, leaving women and non smokers to face gross inconvenience and smokers to blow toxic smokes in the air.
It is a common experience these days that most of the thoughtless people smoke at the public places and the authorities are watching all this like a mute spectator. This menace has gripped the whole valley and the Srinagar city is no exception to the menace. It is surprising to see that the Srinagar, the capital city is witness to the blatant violation of the rules.
"We are surprised to see many smokers puffing at public places without any fear of law.The smoking adds to the already existing problem of the air pollution on account of the smoke produced by the vehicles," said Showkat Ahmad a shopkeeper from Srinagar.
Showkat questioned how can the people from the administration stop smokers from smoking at the public places when they themselves don't respect the laws. According to Showkat, smoking is a routine even in the secretariat. Showkat says that the rules are for the fools and people from the administration are exempted from these rules. One more problem that is confronting the valleyties for a long time now is the use of the polythene bags which is going on unabated. It is slowly but surely transforming the fertile land of the valley into the barren one. The people are surprised to hear the government claiming tall that it is doing everything possible to keep the environs of the clean.
"The government is doing nothing to keep the environs of the state safe and secured as the unprecedented use of the polythene has taken a heavy toll on the agricultural and the forest land of our state. We are heading towards a disaster like the one which took place in Uttarakhand," said some environmental experts whose opinions were sought by the Early Times.
