Jammu, Aug 20: Unplanned road digging, mainly because of lack of coordination between various government agencies, in the city is causing traffic jams, air pollution as the residents of Jewal and adjoining areas are eating dust for the last three months.
Jewel shopkeeper Mahasawer Sharma said that a few days back District Development Commissioner, Ajeet Kumar Sahu along with Secretary, Urban Development and urban local bodies, Satesh Nehru had assured them, to complete the ongoing sewage work at Jewal road soon.
"But even after the lapse of three months, the work is still going on", he said, adding that the road digging works were being carried on in Jammu in a very unplanned manner.
"One agency makes the road today and the next day, another agency starts digging it," he said and added that it was due to the lack of coordination between various government agencies.
"It not only leads to the wastage of public money but also becomes a reason of trouble for people, including commuters. The entire process of digging of roads is totally un-planned. The road is left dug for months together with little or no progress of work", said another shopkeeper Mohan Lal Sharma.
Sharma said the road was dug by the agencies concerned in front of his shop more than 15 days back but the pit was not filled as a result of which a cow fell into it. It was later taken out by the locals with a great difficulty. Potable water supply is also affected due to digging as some water supply pipes have been damaged," he added. When contacted, PWD Chief Engineer Hammeed Choudhary acknowledging the problems being faced by public, said the National Building Construction Cooperation (NBCC), the agency which is working on the project, has been directed to fill the pits soon after laying sewage pipes. The project would be completed by September 15, 2014, he added.
NBCC General Manager, Muhammad Rafiq said corporation was not getting sufficient time to complete the project. "We are being given four months in a year for construction", he said, during darbar move in Jammu the work remains suspended. "It is difficult to carry out work in monsoon," he added.
