Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 20: Are fears over the latest controversy triggered by the RSS chief, Mohan Bhagwat, genuine or fake? Well the controversy raised by Bhagwat by saying that Hindustan is a Hindu nation can be interpreted by people belonging to various faiths and religions differently. The RSS chief has said that India is a Hindu nation and Hindutva is its identity. "Hindustan is a Hindu nation … Hindutva is the identity of our nation and it (Hinduism) can incorporate others (religions) in itself."
Earlier, he had stated that the cultural identity of all Indians is Hindutva and the present inhabitants of the country are descendants of this great culture. If inhabitants of England are English, Germany are Germans and USA are Americans, then why all inhabitants of Hindustan are not known as Hindus? This was the question posed by Bhagwat while dilating on his statement.
And if the RSS chief has come under sharp attack from political leaders professing to believe in the wisdom of secularism it is understandable. Leaders belonging to the Congress and the Samajwadi Parties have berated Bhagwat for his controversial remarks that India is a Hindu nation and Hindutva is its identity.
As is usual a senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh, in a series of tweets, described the RSS chief as "Hitler" and said the Sangh should stop "fooling" innocent people by using religion in politics. "I thought we had one Hitler in making but it seems now we have Two ! God save India !," Singh, also a known detractor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tweeted. This way the Congress leader targeted not only Bhagwat but Narendra Modi too.
Singh has posed a number of questions to Bhagwat Is Hindutva a religious identity? What is its relationship with Sanatan Dharma? Is a person who believes in Islam, Christianity, Sikh, Buddhism, Jainism or any other religion also a Hindu? Digvijay wants Bhagwat to answer these questions adding that "does word Hindu or Hindutava figure in any of our Vedas, Upanishad, Gita, Puran or any other of our religious scripture?, Singh also tweeted.
Hitting out at Bhagwat, Samajwadi Party accused the Sangh of practising politics of "hatred and separatism." "They use such words and language to fan social tension," SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said. Referring to various controversial statements from Union Ministers and leaders of the BJP and the VHP. Congress leader Manish Tewari alleged that there was a "concerted efforts" to polarise the country on religious lines.
Before passing any judgement on Bhagwat or on Congress and SP leaders one needs to learn a lesson or two from other nations. If you meet a tourist from Washington or California he will say "I am an American." The same holds good for those from Germany, UK, France and other countries. And if the same question is posed to a man from India he will say "I am a Punjabi or I am Madrasi or I am a Gujarati or I am a Kashmiri." Hardly a few people may say "we are Indians." It is all the result of tradition and training. India is home to people belonging to different religions speaking different languages. Against this, people living in England are English though they may be Catholics or Protestants. India stands divided among various religions, castes.
Naturally in India Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and others live. This does not allow Bhagwat to say that India is a nation of Hindus because Hindu is a form of religion. Yes, Hindutva could have been the nation's identity had India been inhabited by Hindus only. It is because of this deep rooted belief in one's religion or its superiority that a man from India will not only say he is a Punjabi but also may add he is a Hindu or a Sikh.
A man from India will prefix his claim of being an Indian by saying Muslim Indian. The founder of Pakistan, Mohd. Ali Jinnah, had announced, soon after the partition of India, that "Hindus will cease to be Hindus and Muslims will cease to be Muslims in Pakistan. All of them will be citizens of Pakistan and as such be known as Pakistanis. However, the deep religious and caste division in Pakistan has not ended the divide of people on the basis of religion. The same applies to India. It is better for Bhagwat to urge all citizens of Hindustan to proclaim that they are Indians for all practical purposes. Let people from India call themselves as Hindustanis. By chanting the mantra of Hindu and Hindutava the RSS is simply causing bigger embarrassment for the Modi led Government than price rise.
