Saving environment through Van Mahotsavas? | | | Jammu, Aug 21: The Forest Ministry observed 65th Van Mahotsava today. The celebrations started with plantation drive from Sidra golf course. An advertisement depicting messages of the forest minister and bureaucrats appeared in local daily today showing their concern for ecology and environment. They also had messages on importance of tree plantation. Apparently, it seems a noble mission. But keeping in view the past conduct of the ministers and bureaucrats, one is forced to respond with a sarcastic smile. The ministers and bureaucrats have been looting the green gold from the very beginning. Some of them have truck with the timber smugglers. Anyway, the same government vandalized the city forest in heart of Srinagar to make way for a golf course. The city forest, experts believe, had been acting as an important catchment for the world famous Dal Lake. In fact, the lake survived because of the forest. But, for promoting a game which a few persons play in Jammu Kashmir and to provide `Pleasure house' to licentious bureaucrats, politicians, media men and business men the forest was brutally vandalized. And, today when the same persons observe the Van Mahotsava, one can only say `Hey Ram'. The state government has been ruthless in felling even protected trees. The historic chinars have been taken to the altar of so-called development, to make way for shopping complexes and parking places. Besides issuing messages in newspapers, the government needs to learn a lesson from the Delhi government. A few years ago, the Chanakayi Puri JK House needed to cut a tree in the premises. The Delhi government gave permission after directing the state government to plant another tree in the premises, other anywhere in New Delhi and the third anywhere in the country. This is how ecology and environment can be guarded. |
