'Hindu Chief Minister from Jammu' | Appreciating democracy | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 21: The August 20 radical suggestion of Congress leader and PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma's that the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) should be a 'Hindu from Jammu province' has, as expected, not gone down well with Kashmiri leaders, both separatist and "mainstream". It is not in good taste. J&K is integral part of India and ours is a democratic polity, where anybody - Hindu or Muslim or Sikh or Christian, man or woman - could become Prime Minister or Chief Minister or could hold any other constitutional position. There is no bar. The Constitution of India and even the Constitution of J&K nowhere says that a particular person belonging to this or that caste or this or that religion alone could hold any constitutional position. Sham Lal Sharma only spoke the truth when he said that APJ Abdul Kalam, Manmohan Singh and AR Antulay rose to high position of President, Prime Minister and Chief Minister, despite the fact that they belonged to minority communities - Muslim and Sikh. Sikhs constitute around two per cent of the country's population and Muslims 13 per cent. As for the Muslim population in Maharashtra, it is around 10 per cent. Not only AR Antulay, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, three other Muslims became Chief Minister. Abdul Ghafoor became Chief Minister of Bihar in July 1973, Barkatullah Khan Chief Minister of Rajasthan in July 1971 and Anwora Taimur became Chief Minister of Assam in June 980. Bihar, Rajasthan and Assam were, and are, all Hindu dominated. That members of the minority community rose become Chief Minister of these three state only proves that the people of the country are very liberal and that they don't mind members of minority community becoming Prime Minister or President or Chief Minister. Remember, the Hindu population in the country is more than one billion and five crore. The people of Jammu would have appreciated the Kashmiri leaders had they endorsed the suggestion of Sham Lal Sharma. By opposing the suggestion, they have once again proved their whole approach is parochial. This is not good for the political health of the state. |
