In BJP 44+ mission, women cadre in waiting list? | | Kunal Shrivatsa | 8/22/2014 11:01:08 AM |

Jammu, Aug 21: Gung-ho over achieving "Mission 44 plus" in the forthcoming Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is using all the tricks up its sleeve to accomplish the target; however, the BJP seems to be off-track as far as giving due representation to women leaders or activists of party in its endeavour to reach the desired goal. So far the BJP's scheme of things suggest that fairer sex, whose numbers is almost fifty percent of the total population in the country, is not getting the attention it deserve from the party leadership in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. If sources are to be believed than even the women leaders as well as grass root level activists of BJP of late have started to feel neglected as they are not rewarded with a major organizational responsibility. "The women leaders and workers of BJP are not at all amused the way state leadership as well as its high command has treated them… The neglect has gone overboard now… The BJP has failed to gauge the female power… The constant overlooking is certainly not going down well among the BJP's women activists," said sources. The state BJP's cold response to accommodate and promote its women leaders could be gauged from the fact that it has failed to groom a female leader with mass appeal in the political spectrum of the state. Leave aside the entire state; the BJP could not even count on any prominent woman leader who is popular among the people of Jammu region which is the pocket borough of the saffron party. On the other hand, every other political party be it Congress, National Conference (NC) or for that matter People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have a battery of women leaders in their backyard who not only have a strong connect with the masses in the areas of their dominance but they have their relevance in state politics. If Congress has Indu Pawar, Suman Lata Bhagat and Swaran Lata, the NC has Sakina Ittoo, Bimla Luthra, Shamima Firdous, Dr Shehnaz Ganai where as PDP has none other than its president Mehbooba Mufti along with Shanti Devi but when one makes a glance over the BJP's kitty, it has nothing substantial as far as woman leaders are concerned either in Jammu or Kashmir regions. "BJP has failed to take cue from its counterparts in the state…. If all other major political parties have made a space for their female leadership why the BJP could not do so," said sources. The sources further said that with state Assembly elections are round the corner, the BJP is busy finalizing candidates for different constituencies, however, in majority of the segments the probable are mostly males as the party has dearth of winnable female candidates. "The BJP has pushed its female leaders to the wall and it has no clear vision about making them empowered…It is nothing but a systematic neglect…The discrimination being faced by the women leaders of the party has stretched too far mainly due to male dominance within the state BJP," said sources. |
