Journey for women in public transport continues to be worrisome
8/23/2014 12:03:59 AM
SRINAGAR. Aug 22: The laid-back approach of authorities to curb overloading nuisance in public transport has amplified the apprehensions of DaminiNirbaya, like frightening incidents among the women of Kashmir. Most of the women commuters complained harassment in over loaded bus by males having 'malevolent thoughts'. They claimed that the criminal silence of administration over the menace might yield disastrous consequences as similar as Delhi rape case which had shattered the entire humanity. Notwithstanding governments tall claims of improving the public transport system in the state, female passengers feel otherwise to travel in overcrowded buses. The casual approach of the traffic police in dealing with the mess had toughened uneasiness among women commuters while traveling in overloaded buses. "One cannot rule out Delhi like incident in Kashmir if the government does not take some tangible steps to tackle overloading mess in passenger buses. I must not hesitate to say that traffic police department has miserably failed to curb the menace as no firm measures are being taken to teach lesson to those vulgar males who purposely get into the buses and start harassing women," RuhilaFarooq a peon in a private school told Early Times. Even though government has ordered reservation of first eight seats for women in all public buses, the male passengers hardly follow it. One can find stickers reading 'first 8 seats reserved for women' pasted inside mini buses, but neither drivers nor male passengers pay any heed. A woman standing in the middle of a crowded bus only invites unwelcome physical contacts and similar advances. "This is a matter of embarrassment for those drivers who for mere lucrative benefits are putting our chastity on sale, as far as my experience of traveling in overloaded buses is concerned I cannot describe in words what sort of difficulty a women is facing during her travel," said Afroza a sales girl at a women ready-made garments shop here. She said the drivers and their conductors were taking undue advantages of overloading and starts harassing females by touching them while sitting next to them on the front seats and acting like they are merely shifting the gears. "If a woman is sitting by the window and a man harassing or assaulting her is sitting behind her she even cannot raise an alarm owing to embarrassment. One cannot feel safe in such a hap hazardous system where government has turned a blind eye on such sensitive issues," TurfatNabi Mir a student while sharing her awful experience in overloaded buses said.
