Land encroachers on prowl in Rajouri, authorities clueless

Early Times Report

RAJOURI, Aug 23: Many a times several NGOs, including Social Justice, have raised voices against the activities of land mafia in Rajouri district as maximum government lands in the vicinity of district headquarter and tehsil head quarters have either been encroached or transferred on their names by these encroachers.
In an astonishing disclosure, under Right to Information Act (RTI), state revenue department had recently said that district Rajouri tops the list of government land encroachers and about 49,000 kanal of government land is under the illegal occupation of land mafia. Despite these revenue records, the state governments as well as district administration have failed to take any action against land mafia and they have again activated their activities and now their target is forest land.
On Friday, a deputation of the people from village Larkuti met with DIG AK Attri and informed him that for the last many months some people in nexus with officials of Forest Department and from district administration have been deforesting some areas for making agricultural fields near their village and have also constructed houses on the forest land. People also held protest demonstration against some revenue and forest officials alleging that the matter was several times taken up with the concerned police officials but they turned blind eye on their complaints for the reasons best know to them.
Villagers also informed the DIG that many a times they tried to stop the encroachers but were thrashed by these goons. They requested DIG to take action against these land encroachers so that the forests can be saved. Sources said that after paying patient hearing, DIG reportedly assured the villagers that soon n action will be taken against the members of land mafia.
