Militants give slip to army at Gugerpati
Arms, ammunition seized in Machil

KUPWARA, Aug 23: Militants on last night managed to give slip to the army after they broke the cordon at Gugerpati in Zaloora area near Sopore Town of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.
According to official sources that army's 47 RR had launched a search operation at Gugerpati area of Zaloora in Sopore last evening. As the patrolling party reached near the Gugerpati forests, the militants hiding in the area had a face-off with the army.
As such the joint team intensified the searches in the whole forest area, the remaining militants hiding in the area tried to break the cordon and opened heavy fire upon the forces, however they were engaged by the forces resulting in a fierce gun battle, sources said. According to well placed Sources, "it is believed that there may be some more militants hiding in the forest, police and army has started a massive search operation to track down the militants who are roaming here from last few days. A brief exchange of fire took place however, in the firing incident, no one has been injured, he added and said that yesterday night, the militants opened indiscriminate fire and managed to break the cordon laid by the forces, they said, adding that the forces recovered an AK-47 rifle, left by militants, from the spot. "Massive search operation in the area is still going on with the help of reinforcement to track down the militant group hiding in the forest area," sources said. According to sources, army has cordoned off all the routes connecting to Gugerpati forest area in Zaloora.
"Army's 18 and 28 RR cordoned off the forest area in Lolab that connects Vilgam-Zaloora forest while as army's 30 RR and 27 RR cordoned off the forest area including Yemberzalwari that connects Bandipora. Besides, army's 22 RR launched the search operation in several forest areas that connects Sopore." A senior army official told that the militant group managed to escape while taking the advantage of darkness.
He said that the search operation may take more than three days to trace the militants. Sources said that top Lashkar-e-Toiba Commander Saifullah of Pakistan was among the militants who managed to escape from the spot. Meanwhile, army's Army 45 RR recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition during a search operation at Indra Behak in Machil sector in Kupwara district.
"AK 56 rifles - 02, AK 56 mag - 02, AK 56 rounds - 38, Pistol Chinese- 01, Pistol Pak - 01, Pistol mag - 02, Pistol rounds - 06, UBGL -01, UBGL Grenade - 12, Hand Grenade (H/G) 36 - 01, H/G 90 - 01, GPS- 01, Pouches - and First Aid medicine", official said.
