J&K not a trilateral issue | Mr Maulvi Mirwaiz, all citizens are not Kashmiri | | Neha JAMMU, Aug 23: It has becoming customary with Kashmiri separatists and others in the Valley to term the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir as Kashmiri, which is not the case. Even on Friday, Mirwaiz termed the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir as Kashmiri. "Kashmir is not a border dispute between India and Pakistan or an issue of leadership; it is not an administrative matter or about economic packages. It is a political issue concerning 1.3 crore people of Jammu and Kashmir living on either side of the LoC…No dialogue between India and Pakistan will be successful until Kashmiris are involved as primary party to the dispute," Mirwaiz said while addressing Friday congregation at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. It is hardly necessary to point out the implications of what he said. Suffice to say that he outraged the people living outside the Valley by calling the non- Kashmiris as Kashmiri. However, it needs to be underscored that Kashmiri Hindus and Kashmiri Sikhs do share the view of Mirwaiz and his ilk and that they are, unlike MIrwaiz and his handful of followers, are committed to India. Mirwaiz terms the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir as Kashmiri. It's communally and political motivated assertion. The state is highly diverse as it houses a large number of religious and ethnic groups. Even former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had publicly acknowledged in Jammu, saying "Jammu, like Kashmir is highly heterogeneous". The Kashmiris inhabit the small Valley alone. People inhabiting other areas of the state, including even the mountainous areas of Kashmir, are not ethnically Kashmiri. Bulk of population which inhabits the mountainous and hilly areas of Kashmir is non-Kashmiri and it consists of such ethnic groups as Gujjar, Bakerwal, "Pahari", Dards, Pathans and so on. As for PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, not a single Kashmiri inhabit these areas which are under the illegal occupation of Pakistan since 1947-1948. PoJK houses Pathowari-speaking people. Some people call them Pahari, which is not a right nomenclature. There exists no such ethnic group as Pahari anywhere in the world. Those who inhabit the mountainous areas are usually termed as Pahari. Similarly, the people of Gilgit and Baltistan are non-Kashmiri hundred per cent. A vast majority of population in PoJK and the entire population in Gilgit-Baltistan minus those who were settled by Islamabad over the period in these northern areas to change their demographic landscape to promote its geo-political and economic interests, are against Pakistan. They want independence but the cruel Pakistani army and some Pakistani agents are playing a negative role and perpetrating barbarities on them. They are living like slaves live. More than 98 per cent of people who inhabit Jammu province are non-Kashmiri and the main ethnic groups are Dogra, Gujjar and Bakerwal and Pathowari. The remaining less than 2 per cent are ethnically Kashmiri and they are there because their ancestors migrated from Kashmir decades/centuries ago to its adjoining areas due to political turmoil in the Valley. Same is true of entire Ladakh consisting of Leh and Kargil districts. Racially the entire population of Ladakh is Mongolite. Taken together, non-Kashmiri population in this part of the state constitutes nearly 60 per cent and the ethnic Kashmiris constitute nearly 40 per cent. The non-Kashmiris in these parts of the state plus those in PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan constitute over 80 per cent of the population. It is strange that no political party in Jammu province or no Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh-watcher contests the spurious claims of Mirwaiz and his ilk. It is time to call the bluff of Mirwaiz and others of his ilk. It is in their interest as well as in the larger national interest. |
