KUPWARA, Aug 27: Residents of Handwara and its adjoining areas are up in arms against the authorities despite the court orders and government ban the stone crushers continue to operate on the banks of nallah Mawar, while the state authorities are in deep slumber in Kupwara district of North Kashmir. According to sources , "the stone crushers and other plants are being run on the banks of Nallah Mawar which is perturbing the locals of the area. The government is taking no action on ground to stop the environment pollution that continues unabated in the area, he added that Sonaullha Ganie of Handwara said that the operation of stone crushers is affecting the nearby paddy fields and orchards and that despite the government has ordered that the crushers be sealed, it seems that there is a nexus between the plant owners and the local administration. General Secretary of Nallah Mawar Save Forum (NMSF) Abdul Ahad Bhat told Early Times over the phone that they had earlier moved to the honorable court of law that after hearing the case, where it was declared the operation of stone crushers is dangerous for the environment in particular and common masses in general. However the division bench of High Court after hearing the PIL and observed that the operation of these stone crushers and other mixing plants is needed to be regulated to save the ecology and environment to ensure sustainable development, Bhat expressed. He added and said that Nallah Mawar Save Fourum filed public interest litigation (PIL) 794/2009 filed by Handwara villagers and had sought closing of all the unauthorized stone crushers and other plants to save the fragile ecosystem of Mawar fresh water and other streams in north Kashmir. "Jammu and Kashmir assembly environment committee headed by M.Y. Tarigami had also visited the place and compiled a report wherein it was mentioned that it is dangerous for the environment if the stone
crushers continue to operate from the same place, general secretary said. Locals alleged that, despite all the orders and strict ban, the stone crushers continue to work on the banks whereas the local administration has become mere spectators.
A top official from Deputy Commissioner's office Kupwara wished not to be named said that ban has been imposed over the operation of stone crushers and other plants too on the banks of Nallah Mawar. Local Mafias are violating the norms which were already set by the administration here in district Kupwara now strict action will be taken against the violator's official said.
