Chuntikul tells a sordid tale of neglect, laid back attitude from people at helm | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Once praised for its scenic splendors and eye-catching exquisiteness, Chuntikul the main outflow channel of picturesque Dal Lake, stridently speaks inability of the government with regards to its sanitation as the same had wore an ugly look due to the illegal encroachments, lavatories, sheds and muck. Chuntikul which is working as a conduit to haul Dal's superfluous water into river Jhelum is in extremely bad condition as the same which was once exerting a pull on tourists is now full of obnoxious weeds, garbage heaps and human waste which clearly depict s the sorry tale of the government with regards to the development of the city. Abdul Ahad, a tourist guide, form Srinagar while lamenting over authority's slack approach to maintain the cleanliness of Chuntikul said, "Chuntikul is the only medium to throw Dal's extra water into river Jhelum, though it's quite depressing on the part of the authorities that no measures are being taken to clean this main outflow which has been contaminated to an alarming extent," "In absence of any conversation measures, the Chuntikul has turned into a cesspool. Tons of garbage and obnoxious weeds which flows into Chuntikul from Dal, has accumulated from SRTC Bridge to Gaw Kadal water regulatory gate. The accumulated weeds and garbage have started to emanate foul smell," Ahad told Early Times. He said that the channel is widely choked while as the solid waste and littering is common along the banks of this channel. "I feel quite humiliating when one of the visitors from Germany taunted me as I conceitedly tried to demonstrate the beauty of once eulogizing channel. He laughed at me and said Abdul I had heard lot about the beauty of Paradise Kashmir but what I heard proved out to be a prank," he added He said that the German guest who was on three day visit to Kashmir got disappointed with the awful condition of Chuntikul and returned back after one day shocking tour to the valley. "Dal needs regular flushing to neutralize the concentration of nutrients and silt. It is the natural process to prevent pollution in the lake. Steps on priority must be taken to improve the inflow as well as outflow capacity of the lake," Rouf Ahmad a naturalist while sharing his views with regards to filtering of outflow channel told Early Times. He said that the problem is compounded by the construction of Foot Bridge over the Chuntikul. The soil dug out for piling has been dumped on the banks of Chuntikul, which gradually makes its way into the channel raising its bed. |
