Jammu based legislators walk out of Assembly in support of West Pakistan refugees | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Some Jammu based legislators today walked out of the Legislative Assembly while alleging that Assembly Speaker; Mubarak Gul has disallowed their plea for holding a discussion on the denial of rights to the West Pakistan refugees. As soon as the question hour was over and zero hour was taken up, MLA Bishnah, Ashwini Kumar Sharma stood up and tried his best to attract the attention of the speaker. Ashwini expressed displeasure that the state government is keeping mum in fulfilling the demands of the West Pakistan refugees. The MLA said that he had asked for a discussion over the issue and added it is a pity that the same has been disallowed by the Speaker. He was supported by the legislators of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) who also stood up while raising their voice. The BJP legislators also wanted a discussion on the issue. It was for the first time during the ongoing autumn session of the legislature that the issue of West Pakistan refugees came up on the floor of the house. The Speaker while listening to the pleas of the legislators said that the House carried out a discussion on the shelling in the border areas of the Jammu division. He said there is no further scope on the issue and legislators are just playing politics over the issue. The Speaker while pointing towards Ashwini said that the legislator was absent when the discussion on border shelling was taken up. These words did not go well with Ashwini and the legislators of BJP. They said the issue is a humanitarian and should be considered only on those lines. The legislators raised slogans in favour of West Pakistan refugees and wanted that problems of these people should be solved at the earliest. As this was going on the independent legislator from Langate, Engineer Abdul Rashid stood up and started carrying out verbal attacks on the protesting legislators. Engineer Rashid asked this group of Jammu based legislators not to play politics over the issue. He said the West Pakistan refugees should be sent to Pakistan. The independent legislator entered into a war of words with the protesting legislators. The speaker while watching this whole issue said that the protesting legislators should believe the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Defence Minister, Arun Jaitely since both of them have vowed to stop shelling from across the border. The speaker's intervention did not cool down the tempers of Jammu based legislators as they carried on with their protest. They reiterated their demand of giving rights to the West Pakistan refugees. They said that there are certain anti-national elements in the assembly who should be thrown out. On this MLA Bhaderwah, Mohammad Sharief Niaz and MLA Inderwal, Ghulam Mohammad Saroori stood up and said that the 'anti-national' legislators should be exposed by the protesting Jammu based legislators. The speaker also objected to the term 'anti-national' and told the protesting legislators to go to Delhi and talk to the Defence Minister with regard to their demand. He said that he has been witnessing shelling in border areas since his childhood. On this the protesting legislators walked out of the house. |
