Meant for 5 villages Rs 14 crore water supply scheme fails | Residents demand VOK probe | | Saahil Suhail Anantnag, Aug 28: Residents of 'Model village' Khiram continue to suffer due to scarcity of drinking water, as the Rs 14 crore 'Regional water supply scheme' meant for five villages has evidently failed to supply water to a single village. A delegation of the village Khiram told Early Times that the Regional water supply scheme's failure is resulting severe and immense problems to the residents especially to women as the shortage of pure drinking water is compelling them to travel to nearby springs and hand pumps for fetching the pure drinking water. "The former PDP-Congress government spent 14 crore rupees over the Regional water supply scheme but of no vain as it failed to supply pure drinking water to even a single village." told the delegation, adding on rotational basis residents of the three mohalls of the village Khiram are receiving water supply from the scheme. Local residents said that one of the residents was using the water of the scheme for drinking purpose. "We prefer to cover a distance and fetch water from springs or hand pumps then utilizing the water of the scheme for drinking purpose." said the residents They said that they construction of filtration plant was included in the DPR of the scheme but the corrupt officials of PHE department along with the concerned minister swelled the money and functionalized the scheme without filtration plant. "It is grave concern for the department that besides they spent Rs 14 crore the scheme failed." Local residents told Early Times, adding department was supplying impure water to them in absence of a filtration plant. Residents demanded a through probe into the alleged failure of the scheme through Vigilance Organization of Kashmir (VOK). "It is our request to vigilance department that they must initiate a through probe in to the failure of the scheme so that the officials and engineers get punishment for the deliberate negligence which resulted failure of the scheme." Residents maintained. According to official sources Regional water supply scheme was meant for Khiram, Siraham, Nowshera, Shaligam and Shetepora, however the scheme failed after the engineers of the department changed the alignment of the pipe line of the scheme. Pertinently, the failure of the scheme can be gauged from the fact that over dozen machine tube wells were drilled this year in village Khiram to mitigate the problem of scarcity of pure drinking water. |
